Many people get terrible HL2 errors, you just have to wait until Valve fix them all. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :(

Less people than you might think ...

Anyways, do other games work ok? Sounds like something's wrong with that RAM ....
Oh, and has *anything* else changed with ur PC?

Well like i said codename gordon works great. i don;t have any other games installed on my computer. I can't think of any other software that i've added. itunes i think might be it. but i was having the problem before i dled itunes. well i am fed up does anyone know a number i can calll to talk to a tech to help me? otherwsie i'm gonna return it i think.

So, you're blaming VALVe/Steam even though you have no evidence that it's their fault? Nice!
So, Codename Gordon works - Steam is ok.
All you other games don't work? Does this include non-source games? If so, then it's almost certainly a problem on your side. i.e. the RAM.
If not then you need to try some other 3d games first before you jump to conclusions.

Hate to say it but it IS a Valve issue. I have had problems for months and have tried every "tip" on this forum. I have tested every piece of hardware on my rig and it has passed with flying colors. I have ran every new game that I can think of and it has played it without a hitch.

The only game that locks up and then reboots my machine without giving any clues as to why it is doing it is Half-Life2. I have delved into my system logs and there is nothing in them that would shed a light on the problems I am having. The only consistent thing is that I can guarantee a reboot within 20 minutes of playing if I double click on the wonderful CS:S or Half-Life2 icon.

It is a software issue and the number of people with it is growing every day. They have to fix it soon.

Beavis, a few points :p
1. The number of people with these errors is far less than it used to be
2. He really does have no evidence to *prove* that it is a Steam issue (since he has no non-steam games to test)
3. He doesn't have the same problem as you (he can't even load the game at all!)

I would agree with Beavis on this.. it definately is a Valve/Steam issue. I have had this game since it first came out, and i have YET to play it. What is it now.. 3 MONTHS?!!? gimme a break.. every other game on my system works perfectly fine. I myself have tried and tried all the tweaks and suggestions found here and nothing seems to work.

Look, my point is he needs to try out some other games to check first! I'm not saying that it definately isn't a steam problem, just that he needs to try out a few other things in case they work. Ok? Just telling him nothing will help is not much use ...

tlgraham: have you tried validating your game files?

Tried any other non-steam games? What about the original HL (if u have that)

It isn't a Steam issue. I don't believe Codename Gordon uses the same game engine as Half-life 2 and CS:S. The issue is with the game engine for the 2 games that consistently lockup.

I would like apologize to Kirkburn for lashing out but I have had the game for a couple of months and haven't been able to play it. It is very frustrating when someone without any problems tells us that it is a hardware issue and nobody else is having any problems. I check this forum daily and it seems like a new person posts the same problem every time.

Once again, I apologize for being a little tempermental.

HAVE YOU TRIED OTHER GAMES, I.E. NON SOURCE GAMES?

Do you have any games that are not from Valve?

I can play Doom3, Call of Duty, and Painkiller for days without ever getting any errors. As soon as I boot up Half-Life2 it crashes.

I still say it is the software. You would think that my other games would crash also if there was a hardware isssue. But, I have been wrong before (maybe once ;)).

There is a very easy solution to this problem.

Format your computer, reinstall Windows, and steam Half-life 2 etc, and I guarantee you it will work. Otherwise you have faulty ram.

I have a similar problem. I got HL2 a little after it came out and have played it and completed it. So I started playing CS:S, but after a certain point (can't remember when or what changed, just after christmas I think) I get the problem tlgraham has, HL2, CS:S and HL2DM all get to the loading screen and then I get sent back to desktop, no error, nothing. I have latest graphics crad drivers and just got a 6800gt and still same problem. All my other games work fine and codename gordon works. Tried many things to fix this and none has worked. I have already reienstalled the game to no avail. Formating my computer is not an option. Anyone have any ideas?
