What this steam activation truly is ( at least in Ohio law)

The practice is deceptive advertising, or bait-and-switch. In other words, I've spoken to the local DA's office ,internet division, and they've decided to look into this matter. Here in Ohio it is illegal to infringe upon people unecessary extras ( that could cost money) without fully disclosing them. The Ohio Law states: No product or products shall require extra costs associated with said product, not fully disclosed at time of purchase. In other words, you have to tell people there will be an activation, that may cost you more money i.e. phone bills, internet bills, at the time of purchase. The DA in Columbus and his staff are talking with the Federal Trade Commision, and Better Business bureau about Valve and this practice

This case is going no where, I believe, and fast. Steam is free to run, and was deemed necessary by Valve to help prevent piracy. As fo the "extra costs" in the way of internet bills, it clearly says under "Minimum System Requirements" that an internet connection is required to play the game, this implies that you will be using the internet, which means that you will have to pay fees for this time online.

Try at this you may, but everything is either on the box or doesn't fit into Ohio's prohibition because it is necessary.

I live in ohio also. But it says on box, net required.

omfg are you like anal i think if you look at the disclaimer or i thnk even the steam news they let everyone know about it

Folks, this isn't a joke thread, and the other night caused me to call the Better Business Bureau, who told me to contact the Local DA's office. My cable was out, therefore, no internet connection. I powered up the PC, and tried to play HL2, and couldn't. I contacted the DA's office today, and went into Columbus with the box and EULA in hand. They spoke to me about this, and are looking into it. This is not a joke, and large companies do illegal things everyday, be it by mistake or otherwise

The DA didn't spend three hours sifting through consumer laws, grasping at straws. They will contact valve, and the Better Business Bureau about this. This not a definite suit. however anything sold in a state falls under the laws of that state. remember the tobacco suits.

First of all, Valve employees a team of about eight lawyers (pay attention to the Half-Life 2 credits) so my guess is, they've probably got things pretty much covered legally.

Secondly, Steam is not an extra cost since creating and maintaining a Steam account is free of charge.

Finally, an internet connection is clearly listed as a minimum requirement. This implies that the consumer is responsible for the cost of setting up and maintaining an internet connection just the same as it's the consumer's responsibility to upgrade system components if they are not sufficient.

In short, this is going no where. Good job wasting everybody's time.

Wait, just because you can't play HL2 you're suing Valve?

Internet REQUIRED. You CANNOT sue Everquest because they need to activate your account too. GG.

If you are suing them for bandwith, wow, about 50cents for activation. Go to Judge Judy or something.

The box says internet connection required. The consumer is told what they need.

There's nothing deceptive about that, it's pretty straight-forward as a matter OF fact. Stop wasting peoples time and energy.

I'm a moron for questioning this idiotic practice to play this game?
I guess I am then, because I don't follow the herd, and just do what the man tells me to do. I'm a consumer, and I work hard for my money, and refuse to be duped this way. Everquest 2 is a MMORPG, that requires a monthly fee, and connection requirement that is PLAINLY spelled out. not some vague notion, that a connection is required for offline play. I won't be answering this thread anymore. I've spoken, and you may or may not see a difference. If there is a change, bah on you, if no change happens... Bah on me.

First of all this is not a binding contract if it is written in violation of the law. You can not legalize pot, murder or other things like that by getting a contract signed. Two requiring internet is not saying that you will be chaged by valve in anyway shape or form in the future for steam or any other services or sytems that are sold or attached to this purchase. Last Valve is mostt likly NOT tring to screw us, I have played most of their products and yes at times i have questioned their "advancments". Namly steam, but I don't have to pay more for it. In closing I don't think anything will transpire from this disclosure, but it doesnt hurt to protect our selves as consumers either. This is the real world people and for all of us that were teens whan the first half life came out we are adults now. WE have to be responsiable consumers and stop having our hands held by our parents. So i agree call the President if thats what it takes to prevent us from getting ripped off.

You don't want to get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm a consumer, Dottie. A rebel.

Correct, you are a consumer. You go along with the herd just like the rest of us...

I'm pretty sure the package clearly states that an Internet connection is required. I am almost 100% positive nothing will get done from this, as it was clearly a minimum requirement. It was up to you to read the packaging.

original poster should die. the only cost i have paid for hl2 is the 55 dollars to get the game. if you want to cry because you dont have a net connection, or dont want to get one...then dont bitch about it here. stupid, ungrateful n3wb3r azz

haha silly.

The Min. requirements say to play the game internet is required. Just because someone doesn't understand why it would be so doesn't mean it isn't listed or needs to be explained further. It still says it plain as day.

"Why oh why didn't they tell me I would need to connect to the internet." silly ;)

I live in Ohio. Two messages for you:

STOP WASTING TAX PAYER MONEY!

STOP WASTING GOVERNMENT TIME THAT CAN BE SPENT FIGHTING REAL CRIME.

There is no bait and switch, deception, or any other claim you have made. The box says you need an internet connection to play. End of story. Game over. You lose. Go home.

You bought a product knowing that it requires the internet to play. Whether you agree with this or not, the bottom line this is the product your purchased. What you are doing is akin to purchasing a car and complaining that it wont run without fuel. Whether you believe that cars should/could run on solar power, pedals, magnetic feilds, or whatever, the fact is the car you bought requires fuel. If you cannot live with this fact you should not buy the product.

Consumers need to realize that if they dislike a product they can NOT purchase it. We are not talking air, water, or food here. There are thousands of games to buy. Sueing a company because you do not like their product, or as others are doing stealing the product, are not the solution. When you realize this you will be a happier person and will stop wasting the time of others.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but it is the truth. The game requires internet access to play. It states it on the box. The product does not work without the internet. Getting mad because the product works as advertised tells us more about you than the game or Valve.

if you want to be a rebel and protest valve's "duping," don't "waste" your money on half life 2. you were fully aware that an internet connection was required, or should have been seeing as it is on the box. if you don't like it, you don't BUY IT! jeesus, nowadays everyone thinks they can sue anyone when they're mad at them.

Its sad that people keep trying to build legal cases out of their dissatisfaction over hl2.
This one, is groundless.
