Half-Life 2 is probably the biggest competitor of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The same applies the other way round. But what do the developers of Half-Life 2, Valve, think of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

Not much info from Valve there either :) But who doesn't want to test STALKER out? ;) I know I will...

Hmm who was that directed towards? Gorgon just copied that text from the linkage.

Yeah, but come on... do you really think they would say if they didn't like it? You can't really judge from a public statement like that.

No probably not but Valve isn't exactly known for giving straight answers / informative ansers either :) That's what I commented on.

I've been unimpressed by S.T.A.L.K.E.R. so far. I don't see the big deal at all.

Valve will play it and enjoy it if it's a good game. Woo. Valve are game players just like us.

The stalker devs don't have a very good track record, which is why I'll wait on this. I hope it's great, but I'm going to have to see and hear about the gameplay first.

I doubt Stalker is really considered competition. It comes out next year, and it is a fairly different game type. Furthermore, it almost certainly wont hold a candle to the popularity of HL2 MP games.

Yeah sure they don't...... Lets look at the "Valve only thread".....

Actualy that thread proves his point.

Look at any email that asks a question like "will X be MP for HL2?" and the guy also asks something else less interesting and Valve always answer the less interesting one.

That why whenever i email them i ask only 1 question and make sure they can not turn the question into something else...

Eg. Will we have fully destructable buildings with HL2?

Valve: A mod could do it

thats doesnt answer the question, that gives no information on wether HL2's actual un modded game will have fully destructable buildings.

etc....

Fan: Will HL2's multiplayer be CS:S?
Valve: You could do it in a mod.

Fan: Will we get to play HL2?
Valve: A mod could do it.

LMAO

No words, just D:
As far as I am concerned, Valve and we all know that HL2 will blow everything away.

And they said at E3, "we just want to ship the damn thing, thats all we think about"

:)

actually, i'm looking forward to stalker better than hl2.... (dunno if i said this write)
what i mean is, i want stalker more than hl2.... it seems much more interesting for some reason...perhaps my rpg fan side is pushing me toward stalker...

Valve are looking forward to playing both Doom 3 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R from what i can remember from previous interviews with gabe... and who wouldn't be? Just because they make games doesn't mean they can't try other games of the same genre :D

Stalker is going to be a good game because of sidesteps the normal fps genre and redefines things in its own right. The game is not your typical shoot em up or stealth game. The game incorporates a special system that depicits life in their game world very well. Monsters roam, things are never the same except for certain scripted events. You can run from one side of the map once, twice, even six times and nothing will be even remotely the same except for those said scripted events. The game is supposed to be a survival type game rather than more incredibly linear. You go at your own pace(which isnt new, but its different with the whole 'survival' theme).

Its going to be very interesting, and in no way can be compared to any of the games out there right now.

The graphics and physics looks amazing, and it seems they've taken notes from GTA, the playin area being huge and very open ended, the only concerns i have, which i havent seen much evidence of in the video's is the AI, and im not a fan of heavily moded guns... they look huge and very odd. Just strange to have a rifle with scope/night vision/grenade launcher/bayonet etc... still , looks promising. :)

And it could have all that, and still be terrible. I've heard this sort of thing before. The problem is that these sorts of claims can't really be shown until you play the real game.

I'm definitly looking forward to Stalker, From my impressions of it it will be an excellent game, and very open-ended. So if you like open-ended games like Morrowind, you'll really like stalker.

After seeing the latest videos I'm sorry but tetris will seem to hold my attention longer.

Wha? I think not...Doom III holds that job.

Regaurdless, Valve is composed of gamers, just about all of them with buy 10 new games and start playing them once HL2 is done, I hear they got a lot of catching up to do.

STALKER is looking to be completely different gameplay-wise from HL2. I'm not even sure I'll want to play it. Free-form games usually end up boring me (morrowind).

I don't see Stalker as competition for HL2 because they are too different. HL2's niche is that it will have deep storytelling unlike what we have seen in the past. Stalker is part of the 'non-linear = better' side (Fable, DX, GTA).
I think that the D3/HL2 matchup is more accurate since they are both story driven games.

i e-mailed valve and this is what i got.

Me:"Is Half Life 2 real?"

Rick:"That'd be an interesting mod"

Ahaha, too bad Fable is entirely linear and dumb now.

Fable looks, sounds, and feels awesomatic. I don't play RPGs much at all, but this one looks really good. Definitely the game to get for Xbox this coming September.

IMO i think SLATKER will be boring. It looks to deserted and it looks like theres no action.

I'm sure they're looking forward to playing it like anybody else. Of course, this brings up the question of what the Stalker team thinks of Half-Life 2!

Stalker is a game that is definately on my "To Play" list. That list only contains four awesome games thus far.

Half-Life 2
Rome: Total War
Stalker: Oblivion Lost
Soldiers: Heroes of World War II

Isn't Doom 3 on your list? I mean... yeah? HL2 prabably wouldn't exist without Doom.

My "Must Play!" list for 2004 is actually quite short:

Half-Life 2
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

By the way, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s subtitle was changed from the esoteric "Oblivian Lost" to the more coherent "Shadow of Cherobyl". The developers wanted it to reflect the actual content of the game.

stalker is a curious one, HL2 is the only game i must play, the others i may slowly obtain but i don't have the drive for non HL2 games.

My "Must Play!" list for 2004 is actually quite short:

It's shorter than you think, given that only HL2 even has a chance of actually coming out in 2004.

See... i've got it all planned out. My entire year for 2005.

Wake up at 8:00
Shower until 8:20
Make a quick breakfast, finishing eating at 8:30
Pop in Rome: Total War and play until 12:30
Eat lunch, come back to computer desk at 1:00
Pop in Soldiers: Heroes of World War II and play until 3:00
Play Rome: Total War until 5:30
Play Soldiers again for 30 minutes until 6:00
Pop in Stalker and play until 8:00
Stop for 30 minutes to make and eat dinner until 8:30
Play Half-life 2 at night when its creepier until 1:30 in the morning.
Sleep until 8:00 in the morning, rinse repeat.

See! Its all good, i'll never go bored of one game <grins>

Stalker will be great if it does everything the developers say it will.

(however, I have my doubts that it will and think the fighting/AI could very well be crappy. Time will tell)

And when you run out of food? :x

Did anyone witness the car-wreck that was the Soldner release? I can see the same thing happening to Stalker. Another small relatively obsure development company that is keeping their product pretty well hidden. I'll definitely try it out though. Hopefully it's cool, although if it is I expect it to be cool in a different way.
