Well what was his role in the resistance ? I understand it was a big one but what were the things he did for them ?

He was very high up. Maybe even the leader. He cooridinated everything, and organized all of Kleiner and MAgnusson's research.

He WAS the leader of the resistance alongside Kleiner and Barney, who are the secondary leaders.

I figured he was the charismatic leader of the Resistance. You really don't see him talking about "scientific" stuff despite the fact that he's got a PhD in Theoretical Physics.

You can look at it this way:

The rebels are a bunch of explosive barrels.
And Eli was the Gravity Gun to them.

He was the leader of the resistance but personally I believe that Magnusson should be given that position considering that he does a better job than Eli.

Samon, i'll kill you too.

Though he hates slackers and is a complete workaholic, which actually proved to be a good thing.
And the Vortigaunts seem to praise him.

I look at it like this - Eli was to the Rebels what the Citadel was to the Combine. AKA: Very important.

Like Gordon destroyed the citadel...the advisors are now pretending to be Gordon and destroyed the rebel's "citadel".

Eli was leading the attempt to best the Combine through technological advancement. He's really the main guy, but I don't think there was a point where he threw up his arms and declared himself the Big Cheese.

With all this talking in past tense about a dead character, and who he was for the resistance, all the good things we remember about him, i'm starting to feel this thread like a commemoration

I hate good characters to die

Samon, you know as well as I that Eli was a man of the world. He'd have called himself Le Grand Fromage or Der Grosse K?se or maybe Il Formaggio Grande.

Magnusson is a fine Scientist but I think he would be a poor leader. He does not have the compasion for "his people" that a man like Eli had. He doesn't bear the sence of responsibility for the outcome of Black Mesa like Eli did. It takes more then skill and intellect to lead people. If they don't feel you care then their alegiance will be half-hearted and temporary. Eli possessed everything a "resistence" leader needed: wisdom, tenacity and compassion.

Magnusson may end up taking up the helm, but he could not hope to fill Eli's shoes... especially in the eyes of the individual members of the resistence.

Why wouldn't Barney take charge of the resistance? He's already proven an able leader and fighter during the street wars in HL2, and he's proven his compassion when he helped the citizens evacuate from City 17 at the end of EP1.

Plus; Barney > Magnusson.

Magie is hardly a leader of men. Barney fits the bill much better, but then the only npc of rank we've met so far is that Colonel. Odessa?

Col.Oddessa wasn't really a Colonel at all - I don't think. Plus he's to much of a coward to be a good leader. Remember how he gave you the RPG to take down the Combine gunships and later took credit for it.

I'd like to see Barney take the leader; but I'm sure Magnusson with his - to say the least - imposing character will most likely take Eli's place.

Yes, Barney is a fighter, but not much of a leader. He may be able to command battle squads, but not the remnants of a whole race. Also he can't handle scientific work, which is so very needed for the current survival of our species. A character is needed, a mix between Magnusson and Barney, a character like Eli was.

Gordon can't be trusted, as trouble allways seems to follow him lol

I would not be surprised if Gordon is presured to step up as leader, but I don't think it is a role he would want. He is not the desk-bound labbie type. I think we will be hard pressed to replace Eli... to the extent where Valve may have to resurect another original BMRF Scientist to take his place. Though that would seem a bit cheesy.

Perhaps the effects of Eli's death will alter some of our beloved characters in such a way that they will be more befitting leadership. Perhaps Gordon will bring Mossman back from the North to fill the role. Perhaps we will see the first Vortigaunt leader. Who knows, Valve is full of tricks. I just know I am already eager for the next episode. :E

Eli was one of the leaders of the resistance. I won't say he was the leader because they don't seem to have one overall person in command, at least not one we've seen yet. Magnusson talks down to him - remember his sarcastic comments about a family reunion when he finds Alyx and Eli sitting on the sofa together? He wouldn't do that if he was his superior.

That's because Magnusson doesn't really care it's his base after all and he believes that he's in charge of everything. Magnusson isn't so bad once we get close to the ending of ep2, notice how he seems more calm once he's launched his rocket and to which I believe that the reason why he was such a pompous jerk was because he really wanted to launch his rocket that he was waiting for 10 or so years. I believe that in ep3 Magnusson might be a little nicer but still he will have his glorious personality intact.

He was the most important figure besides Kleiner, Gordon, Alyx, and Barney.
