What was Eli for the resistance?

Considering Lamar jumped into the portal with Gordon during HL2 and was transported to some random location... and yet shows up in Ep2 anyway, nothing would surprise me.

I've heard of dogs finding their way home from miles away... but lamar must have a homing beacon with return teleporter instead of a shock collar.
