I want the sequel to go into... pre-production, I guess you could say. Have the ideas go into the pot, and have them start cooking. I really want HL3 to be something immensely special.

In the meantime, they can actually get expansion packs made.

do what they did for the hl expansions. contract them out to other developers under supverision so we'll have an expansion with some of the goodies taken out of hl2 (or maybe saved for hl3) while not taking away from valve's attention on developing hl3.

Expansion as a combine would be cool or play as Barney Calhoun again but, as he starts on the combine side (like at the start, kind of a spy) and then gets caught so he has to fight for the resistance in the streets etc.

in the citadel. I'm sure everyone remembers the "on a rail" sequence in the Citadel; the beginning of the expansion would be like one part of that sequence. You'd see those drone/engineer aliens fixing up gunships, and you get in a dropship, and it flies off through one of those huge gaps in the wall.

Just going on a random patrol, until you hear about a rogue citizen, and you fly in, and just catch a glimpse of Freeman in the sewers, and then start fighting off the resistance, destroying the underground railroad, and so forth.

And I don't want an expansion passed off to another developer. Laidlaw probably has tons of little story threads that he could quickly expand on, creating an entire side-story around the Combine. Then he'd spend time convincing some Valve employees to start working on this story branch rather than starting HL3.

Expansion pack playing the part of a Combine soldier is a great idea. He'd have the same common enemies as the human resistance(zombies, headcrabs, antlions...) but he'd also have to fight against bands of humans and the more intelligent Xen aliens like the Vortigaunts, or maybe even bring in the Garg! Give the Combine soldier access to the helicopter gunship and the APC(!). We should petition Valve to get to work on this asap.

Both! expansion packs emerge while the sequel is being made one way or another. That's why they're around really, to bridge financial gaps and act as a sort of extension strategy for the original product; they cause sales of the original to increase as well.

Definetly one with Barney, taking place before HL2.

Start out as one of the resistance fighters, fight a few fights with the combine, sneak into the citadel, take one of their costumes, sneak around, I don't know where it'd climax but this shows both the Combine side and Barneys side, a mix of Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

The only problem is deciding whether or not to have barney ever have to fire at his allies in order to stay camoflauged.

Not sure if a "Combine Story" would be that successfull, many have a problem with playing as a bad guy. I know I do... always tries to be as nice as I can.. keep my npc friends alive and so on

I hope they invent some new character and sets the time before HL2. Perhaps at the arrival of the Combine. Or at the end of HL perhaps... lot of mystery to chew on there

Edit: If set at the arrival of the Combine, Adrian Shephard could be used. He is called in by the G-Man to fight the newcomers. Might be fighting still in HL2 on another location... who knows

Having expansions where you played as a combine soldier and a resistance member would be cool. It's such a blatantly obvious idea to play from the other side's POV, as well as playing as someone who views Gordon as some sort of messianic demi-god, heh.
