Hey guys. I have this large hankerin' to play Castlevania: SOTN but my Playstation is on the fritz. What's the best PS1 emulator available and where could I find it? Thanks.

If you have Windows 98, I can't stress CVGS. It's no longer in production, but the last version works so beautifully without ANY configuration. It has memory card support, and controller support.

Best emulator I've ever used, as you don't have to mess about with settings.

Anyhow, past that, ePSXe is supposed to be really good, but you have to configure it like no tomorrow, and it's a pain to get stuff running properly.

thats is not ilegal?

Playstation Emulators aren't illegal, AFAIK. You have to have the actual game discs to play any games.

What if I have XP? Can I still use CVGS?

Emulators aren't illegal as long as you own the game you're playing on them. I'm looking at my copy of Castlevania: SOTN right now. So no.

oh I think you mean another class of emulator that I heard is ilegal

I know whats the one you mean, well not much

Nope. Won't run. I dual booted 98 before JUST for CVGS. It's just *THAT* good, and I'm not kidding.

Damn. You're hardcore.

I use ePSXe, which does a fantastic job and is certainly the best PSX emulator I've tried. It's not really as hard to setup as one might think, it doesn't take long if you have a bit of patience. And once you've got it up and running, it runs very well. :)

Have you tried running CVGS in compatibilty mode?

Yep. Doesn't work, it almost boots, but it crashes after some memory error. Normally it just won't run.

I used ePSXe to play through Dragon Warrior VII (110+ hours of glorious turn based gaming love), without a problem. It looked better than when I played it on the playstation (filtering), so I went that way.

I do a dual boot 98 also, just because XP often seems to puke when it has to run old games. I can't even run Blue Shift /Magic the Gathering (Microprose), or Worms World Party on XP, so thank goodness for 98.

I can run Blue Shift on XP.
Personally XP only gives me a few problems with some sc modding tools but i barley use them.

ePSXe ran fairly well for me after the configuring etc.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can download PSX isos, but the emulators themselves aren't illegal so long as you have the game and the PSX (I have mine right here... doesn't work anymore but I bought the damned thing didn't I?).

Pretty easy to setup and everything. There are walkthroughs on their site/forums somewhere. Suikoden II works on it, although it runs VERY fast and i'm not sure how to slow it down. Limiting the FPS doesn't seem to do the job properly.
