I like to see where HL2.net people stand on the issue of fanboi.... errr, I mean OPINIONS on which is the most overrated/underrated game of all time.

Most Overrated: (give brief details)

Most Underrated: (give brief details)

To be frank, I don't really have an opinion on the matter yet as I've never really thought about it tbh. I'll have to think on it some more and then give my answer later.

Most overrated : Halo , the first one was ok i suppose , after that it was all about the money...

Supreme commander , while it was an exelent game i just dont think it lived up to expectations.

Most underrated : Startopia , while it is pretty old i just think it died before its time.

Para world , i got this the month it was released , a month later it just vanished from shelves never to be seen again , it wasnt even a bad game.

Most Overrated: Pacman, give me a ****ing break you play a ****ing pill eating little candy-looking ghosts and shit, that ain't no ****ing GOTY material.

Most Underrated: Kane and Lynch, this game is da wack yo fu sho! I mean comeon you can take da guns and go bangbang you get to kill cops do bankrobbery kill these crazy japanese wiggah called retomoto dat game is da bomb but den fcking people say it sucks and shit but dat dont be da truth yo!

Overrated: Splinter Cell: Double agent, this got all the hype being next gen and everything however it seemed to take a detour from the series, the stealth element seemed out of focus which is what made Splinter Cell, well, Splinter Cell :(

Underrated: Psychonauts, godamn Majesco.

Overated: Halo hands down for me, to me they are just piss around games when with mates.

Underated: Dunno, most games I have played have a decent amount of publicity really.

I can agree to that. Many games that aren't overrated have just the right amount or PR as to not upset the balance tbh.

Also, I can agree with many who say Halo is overrated. Multiplayer in the first Halo was fun, but the SP made me wonder if watching glue dry would be any more fun tbh.
The vehicles all felt like bars of soap sliding around in a bathtub too. Laughable physics fs, and I've heard the "Oh but it's on an alien planet with gravity less than that of Earth's" excuse. Doesn't cover up shoddy programming. Good job developers for being lazy and trying to come up with excuses. Plus, most of the weapons aside from the sniper rifle are just lame as hell.

A mediocre shooter at best. Very overrated in any case, and I haven't really played much of it tbh. That's how mediocre it is.
*YAWN* I'm dying from mediocrity over here just talking about it.

Overrated: Halo/WoW. The first was by no means as revolutionary as everyone claimed it to be and it was just extremely over hyped. The latter is an awful grinding, sink hole of a game with a dated engine and no real appeal to me and I've played many MMORPGs in the past.

Underrated: Operation Flashpoint/Neocron. First is a fine FPS war sim that still has me coming back to replay it, even though it's now around 7 years old and it still has a dedicated fan base who are still churning out mods and addons for it. Neocron is a cyberpunk MMORPG with an awesome FPS/TPS combat system and had such an engrossing plot and player world, shame it got nerfed to hell by the developers and 3/4 of the active user base left.

"Oh but it's on an alien planet with gravity less than that of Earth's"

Believe it or not i have heard a similar excuse for Halo 3 , which took place mostly on earth , some one told me "Well its in the future so gravity was changed." and i just stood there horrified at thier lack of scientific knowledge.

Oh brother tell me about it. :dozey:

Sounds like these people need to be hitting the books rather than playing games.

I always Operation Flashpoint had a decent amount of publicity, PC Gamer was all over it anyway at the time.

I don't like the best/worst type of questions, but I've got to admit, I think HL2 is a bit overrated. It's a great game, but not as great as people make it to be IMHO.

It's impossible to summarize the matter in just two titles. One should consider the timeframe, the genre, and so on. My two cents, talking about recent games:

overrated: Crysis (absurd magazine reviews and ratings)

underrated: the Penumbra series

Shit yeh, forgot about Crysis, its like seeing this amazing, well made and decorarted house with a lovely, lavish garden and top of the range bricks and windows etc, and then going inside and finding out the walls are made of shit.

overated: halo series. The MP is decent but the single player is bland...

Underrated: Operation flashpoint... I think ive played this game to death, ressurected it, played it to death again before still coming back for more. Its a shame bohemia's follow up game Armed Assault was either a sloppy effort or simply forced out on the market too early by the publisher.

Overrated: Crysis

Underrated: either The Wheel of Time or Emperor: Battle for Dune

Overrated: Halo
Underrated: Mercenaries. Honestly, this game is the most fun I've ever played

Mercenaries underrated? my ass it was hyped as hell by lucasarts when it was coming out and now -EA- are ****ing developing/publishing it(Since pandemic is part of EA now).

I never heard a thing about it and I don't know anyone else (personally) who's played it.

So if I go to africa and talk to several people and they don't know what Halo is, does that make Halo underrated...?

Most Underated:The Half Life Series
Most overated:Mario,Halo

Half-Life series most underrated? There have been well over 200 gaming publications and gaming sites acclaiming the series with positive reviews. Not to mention the slew of game awards the series has received over time.

Truly underrated: Otogi

Your reasoning is flawed, because we're talking about underrated games from a gamer's standpoint. If you were walk up to just about any non-gamer and ask them about a game, the chances of them knowing about it is many times lower than it would be for gamers. Sheepo is a gamer who had never heard anything of mercenaries before he played and enjoyed it, thus, he feels that it is underrated as far as publicity. Besides, this thread is about opinions anyways, so even though you may think he's wrong, that doesn't mean he is.

For me:

Overrated: WoW

Underrated: Shadow of the Collosus

Undderated? Dwarf Fortress, Psychonauts - well, not underrated, just nobody bought that one.

Overrated:

Halo 2 and 3 - just an average FPS really why all the BEST GAME EVARR comments? First one I can understand cos it changed things but the sequels? meh

Command and Conquer 3 - When I played this I thought it was ****ing awesome (cos it was my first RTS) then I played other RTS and noticed how unimaginative this is and how it stains the other cnc games

Crysis - Graphics so good I would hump the screen but the gameplay...meh and why does it take at least 10 shots to kill anything when you don't hit them in the head? Story is crap. Characters are annoying. Driving sucks and it is quite easy to get lost at times as well.

Mario - a lot of people know I hate nintendo and I am just of this guy now

Zelda - see above

Underrated:

This is hard cos most of the games I play get at least a decent amount of publicity but if I have to pick one then it would be fahrenheit/indigo prophecy because although I can understand some people's problems with the story going bat **** insane and having really crap graphics but really with those exceptions it is one of the best games I have ever played. With a gripping story and great charactes (except the male detective he was annoying as all hell) this game is a flawed gem.

Not sure what I'd say was overrated. Probably the halo series like everyone else. Though, I did love the multiplayer on the first game.

Underrated: I'd say Shenmue. Awesome game; and for its time I think it looked amazing. The story was awesome and some of the fighting scenes were really good. It really wasn't a game for everyone, but I really think it should have earned more praise than it did.

Most Overrated: (Halo) First was good and others where 100% shit none should have gotten the praise they did.

Most Underrated: (Deus Ex) Should have sold millions it would have resulted in another bread of games that really don't exist anymore.

So true ;(

The other games was 100% shit? No offense but that's bullshit, they are overrated definitely, but shit? Kiss my ass, if Halo 2 and 3 are 100% shit then so is CS.

Deus Ex I can kinda agree on, I wouldn't call it underrated but it didn't get the COMMERCIAL success it deserved.

You're saying where I live is the equivalent of Africa?

Overrated: Halo 3
Oh, look! It's Halo 2 with bubble shields! GOTY.

Underrated: Startopia
I could play this for hours on end. Fun style, addicting gameplay, and great tunes. I pine for the sequel that will never come.

Overrated: Halo 3

No it's Halo 3 with Theatre, Forge mode and a single and multiplayer map editor for the 360 being hinted at, afaik it would be the first FPS on the 360 where you can create your own single-player levels etc and on modern consoles overall, only other FPSes I can think of that lets you design your own single-player levels on 'modern' consoles are the TimeSplitters games..

That may be, but as a PC gamer that excites me by exactly nil. A level editor should not be a plus point on how good the actual game is.
As a game, without these little extras that PC games have had eons, it is no better than the original Halo, except for shiner graphics.

Overrated: Halo, good game, not greatest game.

Underrated: Ricochet and Deathmatch Classic. Seriously guys, give 'em a chance.

Overrated - Half-Life I mean, come on, no dialog from the main protagonist? GAY!

Underrated - Halo BEST GAME EVARRRRR

Eons? Last time I checked PC games haven't even been around for a single eon..(A period of 1,000,000,000 years.)

"Being hinted at" doesn't count because it's not in the actual game. If its release retroactively makes the game less overrated, whatever.

Forge and Theatre alone do not make up for the massive retread I found the game to be, let alone make it GOTY material.

I mean, we are talking about titles as a whole, right? A few innovative tools don't spruce up stale game content for me.
