What's the most overrated/underrated game of all time?

Underrated:

Penumbra Series: Yeah its starting to spread around but this game gets no where near enough attention.

Space Rangers 2: Such a fun game, I cant beleive so few people have played it, despite its great reviews.
 
There making the third chapter for Penumbra, supposedly supposed to be out in September or something. I can't ****ing wait.
 
Overrated: Tetris/Pong/Frogger/All classic games. Let them die people, there's a reason they're all free downloads now. These are mindless, boring games that people seem to feel they HAVE to respect due to the legacy they created TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO.

Underrated: Final Fantasy 7. Calling it the best game in the world is an understatement.

Was listening to the Jet Set Radio soundtrack earlier, made me want to break out my Dreamcast.

Underrated Game: Conkers: Bad Fur Day (Conker: Live and Reloaded) nobody ever seems to talk about this epic game. I love it so much gonna be replaying it once I get back to uni.
 
All of the Final Fantasy games suck.. They were fine for the SNES/NES back in the early days of gaming, but for **** sakes.

That'd be the staple function of (warning: made up statistic to emphasize exaggeration) 85% of RPG's.
 
Half Life 2 for me was over rated to be honest. I expected more.

TBH, I realized how dumb turn-based RPGs are myself recently.

I like and prefer action-RPGs these days. Like Deus Ex.
 
The point of turn based RPG's was never about the gameplay. It was always about the story. For me it works. I could care less about the gameplay element of turn based games, because chances are they're trying to tell a story more than they're trying to be a game.
 
Why wouldn't they just write a book.

You buy a game to (for the most part, like atleast 80%) to play, not watch a ****ing play.

Games are about the experience. If that experience is to blow up everything ala Serious Sam, then so be it. If it about a power struggle between a small group of rebels and a big government figure, then that's fine as well.

By the way, people do enjoy turn based fighting, so the whole gameplay argument is dumb as well.

tl;dr: People enjoy different games than you do, move along.
 
Lately the Final Fantasy series has been moving away from the old turn based RPG battles. 12 completely did away with this convention, but the combat lacked depth. If you want my opinion, Xenogears and Grandia 3 had the best battle systems of any JRPG.

If your playing a game purely because of the story and not the fun of the game/experience of the game, then you may as well be watching a movie or reading a book. Not a stupid argument, completely valid argument.

When that game first came out for PS2 (long ago, like in 2001 before I even had one myself) I remember watching my cousin playing that game on his PS2.

It was during the pre-GTAIII era so the "OMG, did you just hit that guy with a dis-membered head?!?!" factor of all the violence was pretty unreal and was really the only thing about that game that stood out from the rest.

Today, the gameplay is too lame to hold anyone's interest. It was just another one of Rockstar's anti-Jack Thompson/Joe Liberman statements during the time. Nothing more.
 
It was my favorite game when it came out, there weren't any GTA like games back then, but like you said now it's just.. A GTA game..
 
Halo series is the most overrated of all time.
 
Overrated: Portal.

At first I thought it was underrated but then came all this stupid unnecessary love for a generally decent game.
 
I just clicked reply, and judging by the length of this thread, I can only assume that Halo has been mentioned at some point. Whatever you said, it was right. Even the bit about the ritualistic murder of children who play the game. I assume that was in too, yes?

Also, Final Fantasy VII, because it's king Excreta of the kingdom of Shitville.*

Most underrated is still System Shock 2, no matter how much it appears in these lists. At the very least, it's underrated by a publisher that refused to ever re-release it on a budget label, and still holds out against an electronic release.

*Moogles and Final Fantasies that prominently feature them inhabit a fluffier, nicer kingdom next door and complain about the smell.

Underrated:
Submarine Titans: An awesome RTS, the thing that's special about it is it's underwater,overall this it's a great game.

Don't really have anything else on my mind now, but there's a lot more underrated games out there.

How you figure the MGS series are underrated? They all sell very well, enough to warrant 10+ games, they all get very good scores.. How is the MGS series underrated?

Under: Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie - So much time spent on these games. Again, not many people seem to talk about them.
 
It looks like alot of people in this thread either

a) Don't know the meaning of under/over rated

b) Have extremely shitty taste in video games

To be honest, most of them look like a) sadly.
 
Overrated: Cod4, crysis, final fantasy, halo, bioshock...

Underrated: half life series by a little bit- too lazy to think of others....

One guy put hl2 as overrated because he liked hl1 better, wtf dude, we're not asking what you like more, its if you think its overrated or underrated. And someone put hl1 as underrated, lol, hl1 has earned the title as one of the greatest games of all times amougn many critics and its the top selling fps game of all time, please get your facts straight...
 
Overrated: Halo Series (although I play 3 online when friends are over), Wii Sports

Why? Because wii sports is becoming the new 'thing' to the point where casual gamers make it seem like its the greatest innovation / most realistic thing ever. Have you heard celebrities talk about it on talk shows and shit or random casuals that make it seem like these are the greatest simulations of the sports games to ever come out. Then say something stupid like "it's amazing how far they've come since the days I used to play Pac-Man" .. when there are far superior things out there in comparison to Wii Sports but it just took that simple interface to get them to finally understand.

Before you jump on me i'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's a good thing to get more gamers gaming and gaming becoming more socially acceptable, nothing's better than a Wii to get women gaming too...but..that doesn't mean it can't be overrated.
