I remmeber i saw a thread about it somewhere, did a search but cant find it.

I know that, i mean the exact model name, the RPG in HL2 is the same RPG in real life and it has a name cant remember what it called

I don't believe the RPG in Half-Life 2 is specifically based on any real-life derivative. It is primarily inspired by the shoulder-mounted surface-to-air Stinger missile, and the anti-tank RPG (generic name for the one all the Middle Eastern terrorists use) although I believe the heaviness of such a weapon prevents the possibility of using a laser to accurately guide the missile, not to mention rockets are fairly maneuverable, but not that maneuverable!

There is no clearly identifiable real-world counterpart, since it is a loosely science-fiction weapon.

yes and what is the grav guns real name? or that combine assault rifle?
"rolleyes"

The RPG in Half-Life 2 is based off of the AT4 Anti-Tank Launcher.

When I read "what's the Half-Life 2 RPG in real life" I thought he meant Half Life 2 Role Playing Game... Curse you Final Fantasy!

If you've ever held an AT4 (and yes I have, while I was in basic at Fort Sill, OK) you can tell that the RPG in HL2 and the AT4 are nothing alike.

First off, just the basics. The AT4 does not have a pistol-grip handle, nor does it have a laser sight. In fact, it fires an un-guided munition that you aim with standard pop-out iron sights. Secondly, it's a one-shot only weapon (although I do believe in a pinch it might be reloadable, not quite sure on that, probably back at the armory).

The RPG in HL and HL2 is really just a made up weapon with no existing counterpart in RL. You wont find many laser-guided RPGs. At the best you'll probably find a wire-guided one, such as the Javelin.

^He's talking about the model (i think), wich is most definitly based off of the AT4.

Many made up game weapons have basis for their model in a real life weapon.

You mean you didn't take it home with you?

Also you guys do realize that the time period has been 10 years. So I just think that there was advancements in weapon techology. Having laser guided rpgs.

Considering doing so would have landed me in federal prison for about 20 years, no. AT4s arent cheap.

Humanity has been enslaved most of that time.

Tech may have leaked from Black Mesa. Also- I think the G-Man gave Odessa that RPG.

The most important thing, is that its a really cool rocket launcher :D

The RPG (with laser sight) was in HL1.

I always thought the HL2 RPG was based off a SMAW (shoulder-launched multipurpose assault weapon). Do a google image search on SMAW, you'll see that all of them have a handgrip. Not sure about the laser guide though.

Actually I think it's an amalgation of various designs. But the two that stand out are the SMAW and the Stinger. However, the RPG in HL1 fired more like an old WWII anti-tank RPG called the Piat.

Could be this.

yeah I think it is loosely based on the AT4, at least in the shape of its tube and the design of its muzzle. it also reminds me of the rpg-7 because of the pistol grip. but no shoulder - fired rocket launcher has that kind of laser guiding.

i should have known we weren't talking about a half life 2 role playing game....

Oops

That is the only thing that matters about the rpg. It owns :)

Most likely, VAVLe did modify most real life weapons to fit into the future scene IIRC.

It doesn't really look like an RPG-7 to me. If I didn't know better, i'd say it was a mixture of the AT4 and the SMAW.

AT4: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/army/docs/st100-3/images/at4.gif
SMAW: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/smaw-dvic566.jpg

Why is someone laughing in the SMAW pitcure?

Well, I know they took the smg almost directly from the HK mp7, the OICW (before it was cut) from existant OICW assault weapons, and the basic pistol was based on the HK USP Match. Basing the RPG on real life weapons wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Danimal: I bet it's because thats the first time that guy is gonna use that weapon, and its always funny to see someone's first reactions after using such a powerful weapon :p Oh and you can't wait for some shit to blow up :)

Model definetely looks like the AT4, maybe not the use and how it works, but model-wise it looks like it... Fairly like it...
