the combine guy is doing some pointing thing while he is being shot and another combine on the other side of the barricade does the same. i don't know about you but it makes no sense to me.(street fight when they reach other side of barricade)

Yeah, I've noticed it too. It looks like they're paralized or something and decides to do nothing against 3 armed guys even though there are 4 of them and one in a tower... HA!

It's been basically turned off for E3, except for the traptown vid.

It has to be. Haven't you noticed in the Tunnels video that the Combine don't notice you until you notice them? They have you in sights, but they don't shoot until you look at them. And also, they can't hit, and every hit from them does 1 damage. The game isn't like that.

is there a post somewhere from a dev that said they turned off the ai?? cause wouldnt you want to show off enemy intelligence?

I hope so, because if the glimmer of AI we saw in traptown is true, then the AI really will rock!

Yes, the AI is off in the vids. Yes, I am sure. Yes, this has been stated.

i remember it said that it had been 'dumbed down' but they didnt say to what extent. could have just been aim, but i doubt it

To the extent that they don't think properly (Throwing grenades back etc), and that they're in fixed positions, and won't move.

Well they definetly seem to be blind as shit in the trailers/bink movies.

Oh and in Traptown when Gordon grabs the radiator a combine soldier is shooting the crap out him, but he doesn't really seem to take that much damage. And yes I know he uses the radiator as a shield but I mean before he picks it up, we get to see that there's a combine soldier shooting at him but his health bar is pretty normal. I think they turned down the damage too.

Guys - AI is designed to be played against, not looked at. Grow up.

Well just to come up with a stupid example:
What fun is it to play chess against an infant?

How do you know this AI is easy to kill? How do you know that it won't be fun to play against (if it is the near final AI)? It is impossible to properly determine whether an interactive sequence is fun without actually interacting with it - so stop crying.

The AI is extremely powerful. You watched traptown I assume. That sequence where the combine were shooting through the windows (I know it didnt hit anything, about 95% of the AI was turned off, true fact from Gabe) was a routine where the AI would investigate a location in search of a foe, and if sighted, engage. When the AI couldn't get in, it kicked in the door. This was not scripted either! The AI learned what was blocking by seeing it, and used its physics driven force (body wieght and inertia) to smash the door down! It actually did that.

You see when the Zombies were attacking you at the end? They are dumb idiots anyway, that is why they just walked into the fan. The models of the zombies were litterally ripped in half, not transformed into two models. The physics of the thin blade edge (like a knife) moving so fast actually cut the body in half. When the zombies were moving towards that barrel, it is because of another routine they designed. The AI "noticed" a barrel there, and because it believed it was within the proper wieght limit of its strength, actually moved to go hurl or kick the barrel at you. It was entirely unscripted, especially when the demo player blew the barrel up before the zombies could get it.

The AI is going to be incredibly advanced. It knows how to react to all forms of physics in its environments and has very advanced routines (like how scanners in the game comb the buildings for life, then signalling soldiers to go into a place with people, or the soldiers looking through, and shooting through, windows in search of you). The combine seem stupid because the majority of routines were disabled. They didn't say why, just confirmed that it was.

edit: yes, damage was reduced as well. What do you think would be the effect if our hero died in the E3 presentation? :x

remember, its almost a year old footage
its a tester playing it...so he is probably testing the level for bugs...or rating it or summit, so why make it hard for him?

I explained why the damage was turned down. My guess was the AI was still a bit buggy, reason for most of the routines to be turned off.

If it was toned down then maybe in the final product, the Combine soldiers might also be 'aware' of the enviroment around them. For example, it might notice a wooden platform with steel barrels on top of the player and shoots the wooden parts to make the barrel fall on the player... That scares me...

it looks like he did die in the docks video
unless that was just to show off the fancy water effects
which it probably was

no.

Yes.

It was recorded almost a year ago (the demo) and played on the latest engine to make the movie.
