Meh. I'd fight for it, I might even be happy to. I'm not all that idealistic about it though, its just something that needs doing. Defending your country is no different than defending your home. You wouldnt let some foreign asshole take a dump all over your house, so why let them attack your country?

I have fought for my country. I have fought for other nations. There is no ifs, ands, or buts, I will fight again if called upon.

Other, mix of great patriotism\want to kick the crap out of the government. :)

don't you people feel grateful for the goverment?

they help us, protect us, educate us, tax us, ect.

you guys can keep thinking small .... earth is my home and she needs to be kept in good health :)

I'd die for Britain, millions have before me for good cause, if we were ever attacked, say if nazism came around again, i'd be first in the cue to sign up.

Why are you making it sound like we are in the debt of government? It's not some divine entity handed down to humanity from god. It's something we made, it's something we fund, and it's something we run. The people in government are supposed to serve the will of the citizens. It is their job, and they are given fair payment for it. Those in government were never meant to have a seat above us; they are not our rulers. We are theirs. We have no need to feel as though we are in their debt. I will only ever put my life on the line if this country is in real danger, because it is an extension of my home and I will fight to protect that. Throwing away your life because "government says so" is not honorable, or brave. It's stupid. You owe them nothing.

If only we were all part of one big nation. That would be mighty fine.

Some people say that they would only fight to defend the actual borders of their country. But fighting a war is not so simple these days. What if you know a terrorist is building a nuclear bomb in the middle east, and is intending to go to the USA - just has to pull the ship within a mile of the shore, and detonate the bomb before he clears customs. it would seem silly not to attack the terrorist base that was building the bomb. Threats are everywhere - and sometimes you have to go to them.

True, although, I think the "only if the borders were under attack" argument assumes that the nation itself is facing mortal threat.
A nuke going off at sea (even wiping out a major city) won't constitute mortal threat to a country.

Also, I think a thread I created a while back might be a little interesting here:

Despite my extreme dislike for the current direction of the federal government, I've managed to remain extremely patriotic. I love the United States, and, given the right circumstances, I would fight and die for it.

Since I'm the only person on this forum who represents New Zealand I must say that us Kiwi's are a crazy bunch and I would sake my own life for the defence of this great Nation.

my country is just a place to live, i dont like it and ill move as soon as possible

Yeah, I can imagine, you must get a bitch of a smog down in Coruscant :O

I like Britain, but I wouldn't call myself fiercely patriotic. I feel more allied to London than I do to the UK.
I'd be very happy for us to join an EU superstate.

The place I live in, and also the place i'm getting out of as soon as I can afford it.

It might not be the nation facing mortal threat, but it would be the people living within 20 - 50 miles of the shoreline. Would you risk your life to help save those families?

I think a nuke wiping out Sydney would be a mortal threat, and i'd get on any plane to anywhere to find out who did it and kill them.

Nuclear attacks, especially today's would be a lot more than the initial damage of the explosion. The blast site would be uninhabitable for hundreds of years. The radioactive fallout would give millions of people cancer most likely. The economy would tank. A nuclear attack on any city would be devastating.

actually, it can last only a month to 14,000 years. or, less than a second.

and, before they get cancer, they'll likely die of radiation sickness.

Yeah, Like the United Earth Directorate in starcraft broodwar.

then, we would only have to fight aliens and not ourselves.

exept some rebels.

Countries come and go, as do people and continents. The world is ever changing, it's natural, why would I want to stop change? Bad things always happend in life, it's inevitable. So why would I give my life so that a few power crazy people could keep their power? All I want to do is live a peacfull and fun life. If there's a war, I'll damn sure run away to peace.

will the world ever be one!

One Massive country.

i very much doubt it.. but i can see europe being a country one day. tbh

And what about your family and friends and loved ones, they might not be able to run so fast.

I agree - there have been numerous nations, empires, kingdoms, states etc throughout the history of the earth. Eventually, they all crumbled.

But humanity endured. I think (hope and wish) that one day all the world will at least be on the same page when it comes to everyday life. Then there won't be any need to pigeonhole yourself as merely belonging to one country. You'll belong to the whole, and the country you live in will not be more meaningful than the city you live in.
