What's your favorite atmosphere in a game?

it depends on the game.....

i like all different types of map, ranging from huge sprawling outdoor maps, tropical rainforests, office buildings, beaches, gloomy maps, bright happy maps.

depends on what im playing, and what mood im in.

Urban settings seem to appeal to me in a really strange way. Anything that is bustling with activity or has daylight pleases me. Those indoor and outdoor atmosphere in night time seems to give me this weird feeling, everything seems so dull and dead.

System Shock 2, best atmosphere in a game EVER.
Its just awesome listening to people become warped under the power of the many

spot on.

back when resident evil 2 was chewing up valuable magazine space, system shock 2 had done it earlier and better. the first and only game to date that has made me scared. brilliant atmosphere.

i like rainy environments, but we rarely get them. i'm not talking about a few spits and drops falling into some water, but proper pull your skirt up and run sort of rain.

Basically Halflife and Halflife2 :)

I also liked watching the battles in Hl between aliens and humans. Pitting the peak of human technological engineering against the alien bio weaponry. I loved it when the grunts won....of course i slaughtered them all after that.

I love the "desperate last stand" feeling you sometimes get. I often make maps based around that theme. The one ive been working on recently has you set in one of the last bastions of humanity, constantly under threat from alien attack. Its a literal fortress built inside a city that has become delapidated and even been destroyed in parts (yes....this was inspired somewhat by hl2:))

I like large open enviroments that are realistic and fun to play in.

I love the feeling of a world beyond the map edges as well.

Deus Ex 1 did just that for me. Which is why I place it right next to HL1 on my all time favourite games. And is also one of the overriding reasons why I cant stand DeusEx2.... :hmph:

Oh yeah, the "world beyond" is good as well. Its like when in games there are doors which you can't get through for one reason or another but they give the impression of something beyond anyway....like the door opens slightly or there is a window. Then there are the more open maps, like for instance Bf1942 where they seem to go on forever but you cant leave the field of battle because of your orders not some invisible wall.

I also like space themed games, such as earth and beyond (not the greatest game but it just gave you a weird tingly feeling in your tummy flying in space =));

heh not bashing?
Hhmm...rather not. I was just stating that I would like for Metroid Prime to be released on the Xbox and/or PC...that's all.
*Bashing not included.

medival, ala Wheel of Time, Morrowind, etc.

although futuristic, ala halo, Unreal 2, are nice too.

Gritty Sci-Fi, definately.

Although Silent Hill 2's atmosphere pwned my socks off. Odd thing is you began to feel bad for James near the end.

That and the Ending was Deep.

Completely different plot. I know Goldfinger is involved somehow. And you play as a bad guy.

Goldfinger...haha. And how can you not play james bond in a james bond game? You will innevitably die.

It does kinda defeat the whole "play as your favorite action star" thing, doesnt it?

Atmosphere various from game to game. But one of my very favorite atmospheres of all time is contained in the silent hill games. Never has any game disturbed me so much, thanks to the sound and the very creepy atmosphere.

Yah, what a horrible idea. Those bastards are trying to be original, someone should ****ing kill those ****ing ****ers, ****!

Post-apocalyptic battlegrounds with you and a lot of allies vs. tons of enemies.
Fun.

I also like futuristic cities, like in Halo 2.

I like like standered winter atmosphere.

But the best atmosphere is:
