For those of you who have played the classic arcade games: Pong, Missle Defender, Asteroids, Galaga, Frogger, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, etc. What is your favorite classic arcade game of all time?

The reason I am asking this is for a summer project I am coding a classic arcade game in java, but I'm not sure which one to try making next. So I was intersted on seeing what button-mashers people like the best.

Well, my brother has an awesome arcade [click to visit] with all of these games and we still play them. People have come from other countries to visit my brother's arcade. He's building a new house with room for 2 or three times more retro games.

My classic favorite is probably Asteriods, even though it's not quite as fun as it used to be for me. I really like Galaga as well. Tempest and Pole Position are really kick ass too.

My favorite Arcade game of all time however, is either Street Fighter 2 - Hyper Fighting or Super Street Fighter.

So, I'd say Asteroids for retro and SF2 - Hyper Fighting for all time favorite.

I do enjoy Mario Bros. even now. Although I am too young to really remember whether that was an arcade game. I do LOVE Pac-Man though.

the original mario bros was indeed arcade.

Afterburner II. It was so much fun, and back then, the graphics seemed incredible.

There was also this awesome fighting game out on Sega Genesis and Arcade... it was a fighter, with all these different dinosaurs and creatures. It was an absolute blast. I'd always be this blue raptor-looking thing called Vertigo, and kick ass left and right.

Galaga!!! Take my ship you stupid bug!!! Now give it back!!!

Street Fighter. Sure they're on consoles but absolutely nothing beats standing up, sweaty palms, the lone joystick and the colored buttons. People standing around, watching.

Yea, but most arcade games have seen at least one console version.

Street Fighter 3.
It's kinda old :/

Primal Rage.
Vertigo was a long necked thing that looked nothing like a raptor. Talon was the raptor.

I dont remember what it was called, as I didnt play many arcade games, but there was this one game at a hotel my family stayed at, that me and my brother played for hours. It was an off road truck racing game with courses, an top-down view where you drove with steering wheels, and I think maybe even pedals. Sweetest part was that you could have someone else in the race along with AI trucks. Damn that was fun.

JOUST!!!!!!!
MARIO!!!!!!!
SPACE INVADERS!!!!!!
MORTAL KOMBAT 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SPY HUNTER!!!!!

oh ya, _Z_Ryuken, I forgot Primal Rage, I owned in that game, that reminds me, I've got it for PSP! Man, I'm stupid..

If tetris counts...then it.

Asteroids is pretty fun also :D

My favourites are kind of old-ish - anyone remember that side scrolling Simpsons game? That was ace. That and Gunblade NY, the one where you're in a helicopter with a huge shuddering machine gun with infinite ammo.

Warlords <3

Best arcade game ever.
Me and my friends would just play this for hours, teaming up against the AI...
And eventually turning against eachother... it was a blast.

I'd say Joust too danimal, I loved that game!

I loved Joust. So awesome. And Rampage was great.

I loved double dragon, or atleast I think it was double dragon.
And I loved a shooter game like house of the dead. It may even have been house of the dead, it was a game that came before 1992.

Wonderboy was the first arcade game that really got me hooked. I'd enjoyed Space Invaders/Pac Man etc before hand, but Wonderboy was the first I completed. After this, Operation Wolf/Thunderbolt, Double Dragon, Space Harrier, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Out Run and Chase HQ took all my pocket money. Then Street Fighter 2 came out ..... the rest is history.

OOooo Chase HQ. Now that game was awesome. It wasn't until I saw someone who was good playing it until I realized that you had to catch up to the speeding bad guy, and try and damage his car and knock it out of commission by collision. You had a few turbos to make up time, as if you hit them in the rear bumper it would really slow you down. .. all while avoiding traffic and beating the clock. It was really awesome car carnage with car parts satisfyingly flying off with each successful impact. REALLY wish they would remake this game with next gen graphics, but for now at least we have the 'cop missions' on games like Grand Theft Auto! (they are available if you steal a cop car) :D

Yes Joust was my favorite game for several years, much more so than Dig-Dug, but I don't want to play one of those games anymore at all, so they can't be contenders for favorite retro game. I still say Asteroids. Turn the volume up to maximum and feel those asteroids exploding in your chest. Good shot... what a good shot man. Those tiny saucers were ****ing bastards - god they were evil.

I think I know what you are talking about. It was off-road truck racing with turbos that were on the track that you could pick up. It was named something like 'Iron-man' - the nickname of a famous off-road truck race driver. That was my best friends favorite game and he played it religiously; he was good.

Here, I found it for ya:
Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Off-Road

Take a look at the screenshots here and tell me if that's it.

What was the appeal of Joust exactly? I found that game absolutely horrendous, even back in the 80s.

I forgot one of the best arcade games (it was also on the Dreamcast): POWER STONE. Omfg, that game kicked so much ass. I remember playing it for so long I broke the TV monitor.

:X

Best arcade game? Metal Slug. Got it to the point where I could pass the first couple stages without losing a single life.

Best arcade game I actually played on an arcade (ie - not emulated ;))? Thunder Dragon. Been at the fish 'n chip shop around the corner since I was like 8, I'd always pester mum for change to have a couple games whenever we went. Got it to the point where... well, same as above :D

bomb jack
operation wolf

I remember these from my Atari :D

Also uhh... Xenon was funky. Hard though. Especially seeing as our joystick was busted and you had to jank it hard in a direction for it to register.

Oh, and uhh... Ikari Warriors or something. So much fun two player, got really sad after the disk busted :(

Final Fight
Outrun
Chase HQ
Ghosts 'n' Goblins
Street Fighter 2
