What's Your Favorite Video Game?

Hey everybody,

I recently caught a few ads on Spike TV for their upcoming Video Game Awards (it airs Dec. 14th but I'm not sure what time, check out their website if you want) and thought to start this thread to see who everyone thinks should win the award for game of the year. Maybe we could tally up the replies here and then compare them to which game actually wins that night? It might be cool too to send these results to Spike TV after we're done, especially if our favorites aren't on their list. So I'm going to dig around and try to find a way to contact them too.

Here's this year's choices from Spike's website (if you don't agree, just put down your favorite):

Burnout 3: Takedown (Electronic Arts)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Rockstar Games)
Half-Life 2 (Vivendi Universal Games)
Halo 2 (Microsoft Game Studios)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Konami)

Also, what's your all-time favorite? (I'm predicting Super Mario Brothers and CS will top the list here.)

Thanks everyone and I'll keep you posted on who wins in case you won't catch it.

Jason

Thief III. Not perfect by any means, but the most fun I've had playing a video game.

if this thread hasnt been done 100 times, i dunno what has (half-life 1)

monkey island series.
mechwarrior series.
command and conquer series.

4 of mi and mw weren't the best though :'(

1) Deus Ex/Half-Life2
2) FarCry/Doom3/Unreal 2/Tron 2.0
3) Painkiller

etc.

It's a pity - but I must say Chronicles of Riddick deserves some sort of award - at least as the "best game based on a movie".

first Hexen - finished it like 30 times and counting
HL/HL2 - no comments needed :p
Transport Tycoon, Doom 2, Need For Speed: Porsche, American McGee's: Alice, Diablo, Heroes Of Might And Magic, Thief, Nethack

and from the stone age: River Raid, Robbo, Ghostbusters, Mario Bros. 3, Contra....

/me going to play some Atari stuff now :E

Did someone mention Unreal 2? :O

For me it's a draw between Mario 64, Secret of Mana, Golden Eye/Perfect Dark and Street Fighter 2.

A certain James Bond game still owns that title :)

but EA then ruined it by bringing out goldeneye:rouge agent. it got 5/10 in Edge magazine... poor.

Reasonably current:
1. Max Payne 2 - In spite of the strange ending. Bullet time 2 was excellent.
2. No One Lives Forever 2 - A good sequel.
3. Doom 3 - A little too repetitious.
4. Half-Life 2 - Rated lower because of engine issues (clipping, awkward ladders, etc.)

All time
1. No One Lives Forever (original)
2. Duke Nukem 3D
3. Max Payne (original)
4. Opposition Force
5. Blue Shift
6. Half-Life (original) - Rated lower because of Xen levels.

No one takes that game seriously (had nothing to do with the movie either - just a feeble attempt to cash in on GE's good name :/)

What about it? I don't want to spoil anything... but did you beat the game on the highest difficulty setting (Dead on Arrival)?

Yes, I beat it on all three levels and did see the alternate ending. I spent some time at the 3DRealms forums and even made a few posts there. Apparently, Joe Siegler (Joe3DRA, one of the 3D Realms team) thought the "original" ending was just fine. :upstare: Still, the alternate ending did not make up for other problems. I will state them as a spoiler just in case.

The problem is that after the original game, some enemies and "friends" survived the game. This was not true of the second game. Everyone from the police chief, Vladimir Lem, Vinnie, Winterson, to Alfred Wooden was killed. It is their choice, but this left a bad taste in my mouth. Based on Joe Siegler's responses, I am guessing that everyone will die in MP3, if it is ever brought out. Although I understand that stories need to be scripted, it is not very rewarding to play the game and have everyone die anyway. My two cents.

Mgs series all time favorite, but HL2 is really threatining them, I expected it to be really good, but this was rediculus hoe badass it was, damn good game.

I'll have to get Mafia in my sig. I'm tired of saying it's the best game of all times.

Favorite Games:

1. Half-Life 2
2. Quake 2
3. Half-Life
4. Quake 3
5. Opposing Force

So far, that is all I got.

Burnout 3 should have, and did, win Game of the Year.

I agreed with that one.

Played too many games. Only a few stand out

In no particular order

Half-Life - nuff said

Zelda: OoT - nuff said

No One Lives Forever - coolest "funny" story in a game ever.

Deus Ex - Deus Ex....its Deus Ex...i mean....Its Deus Ex

System Shock 2 - finished it for the first time last year, and it still creeped the shit outta me

Ninja Gaiden - best fighting system ever made. And one of the hardest games ever made.

Mafia - Most professional game ever.
