when HL2 goes gold...

Dude, you don't start doing homework in your last year if you haven't previously. I tried that, and failed :) I'm just glad we have 'free' classes in school.

Pim - there is no such law that prohibits games from being released on any other day and what your saying is complete tosh.

Games ARE released in the UK on a friday for a other very logical reason really... its to allow people to go get the game to play over the weekend however alot of games are released on any day of the week which.. you should of already knew.

The word is "known", and no, there is no reason why he should have already known this :) Calm down

To sum up - preloading will occur shortly after going gold, probably a few weeks before release. VALVe have said it is pretty likely it will be a simultaneous woldwide release, with the Steam version being unlocked at the same time worldwide (kind of hard not to have that really).

Anyone else noticed that Amazon has changed HL2's release date from sometime in November (11th I think) to 3rd of September? I wonder what caused that. Anyway, I'm still hoping it's out before August.

Whilst what you say is true, it's also...untrue. There is no law, however 99.9% of games are released on a Friday due to the charting process. Same applies to music albums/singles on a Monday and films on a Friday (however, the trend is for the bigger films to 'preview' wednesday/thursday too - the latest Harry Potter film was released on a bank holiday Monday).

I also wonder what makes them set those stupid unconfirmed release dates on their site :(

It is becuase they have to! Sometimes the software doesn't allow for unspecified dates, other times, they are just making good estimates for the benefit of their customers :) Ignore *any* release dates like that, only VALVe will tell us the true release date (seeing as they can decide it, for the purposes of Steam)

What I find odd is that Amazon.com and .co.uk have different release dates, the 1st and 3rd respectively.

Yeah, well im pretty sure they dont work together... just like a seperate division...

Gold?

When a game goes gold it just means that the master copy have been used to burn like 10,000 copies or what? I'm such a n00b about this stuff...

Yes they post unconfirmed (and sometimes ridiculous) dates but they're purely estimates and speculation. They even usually say it's just an "estimated release date" or "ETA" next to those dates anyways. They have to have something there though so the people that pre-order can have some idea of when their purchase will get to them.

I think the only thing more ridiculous than some of these dates is the number of people that actually believe them. I'm pretty sure that if the source of the game (valve in this case) doesn't have a set release date (as far as we know) then some retail or online store isn't going to have some secret information about a release that the rest of the world is in the dark about.

when a game goes gold its finished and the master cd is about to be copied into another thousand.... etc.. cd's.

It just means the final version of the game is done and is sent off to be mass produced for retail. Basically, (excluding patches and updates), when a game goes gold the production company is done and the manufacturing company takes over.

I want to follow the vehicle they carry the Gold disc and see in person how they mass produce thousands of HL2 discs and boxes in the manufacturing facility.

Imagine 2-3 special unit black SUVs following, protecting that main truck. With armed big guys with sunglasses etc.

How cool would it be?

what if I broke the gold disk? Or is it really made out of gold? Probably depleted uranium...

See, this is why we need extra security.

Who's we? Valve needs the security. We just need the game :naughty:
But yeah, Valve does need a lot of security or just secrecy. If nobody knows it's shipping and they announce after the disc has been delivered then nobody's the wiser.
It worked for Lord of the Rings, they shuttled the entire movie on ipods to Peter Jacksons appartement for review for months. The last run they actually had the entire cut of the movie on it. I wouldn't want to be the guy who had to deliver it :D

On a sidenote: Boo-yah 100 posts!

No man, what are you talking about?
Who's Marc Laidlaw anyway?

, i can download it, go to the store and buy the ratail version and enter the cd-key right?

What would be the point? If you gonna buy the disk to get the cd-key you might as well just install it from the disk too.

the point would be not having to wait for the game to hit the local shelves in order to play it

i think the preloading will start on Gold announcement day, like someone else said, it would make sense and give the perfect amount of time to fully load before retail begins...don't have steam but i'm sure people shall start hyperventilating when they see HL2 appear on their steam menus.
