It's been 6 years, how long will it be till counter-strike dies? This is including CS2 and whatever, basically when a game with the words 'counter-strike' is not played.

I say we have another 6 years or more.

When another game comes, plays almost the same but better, and is just as good if not better. Which I see Battlefield 2 being able to do.

Not anytime soon. Look at Doom. There are still folks who make levels for the original games and actually play it online. I don't see Counter-Strike, which is far more advanced graphics and gameplay-wise dying for quite some time.

A decade at the least.

Unless the world ends in 2012. Then it's only 7 years.

People still play quake and doom, so not for at least a decade. And if there is a CS2, and if it's good, for 15 more years possibly :0

It's scary thinking it started out as just another mod for HL.

The mod community won't let it die. That's the main reason CS will stay alive.

well look how popular 1.6 is still....hundreds of thousands still play it, whihc is quite impressive

If they still keep making them, people will still keep playing them. At least I will.

I think it will last for atleast 20 years, because there will be a cs3 and 4 etc... I think in 20 years advanced virual reality will be taking over (the virtual reality where you really think you're walking in a world, like the matrix). But then there will still be counter-strike games... so maybe forever?

see how much hl1 and hl2 outnumber other games, and the number is still growing, whenever valve release some new engine, new games, and the mod community releases some new mods, the community gets bigger. It's really hard to tell when this whole thing will be down forever.

i think that as long as there is a mainstream Halflife/Valve game(when isn't there?) there will be a popular version of Counter Strike.

Anyone could try to kill counterstrike with some other game or mod, but i think youll find that it just won't die.

Does anyone still play Diablo 1? If so then C-S should be around even longer

Heh, Star Wars: Battlefront, given the ratio, has 3 people on a server...

Well, I think it would be interesting to speculate how long it's going to take for "Counter-Strike" to die, i.e. For people to move over to CS:Source. I say in 2-3 Years, HL1 CS will be buried. People's PCs will have caught up and Source will finally be feature complete. How long will it take for the Counter Strike phenomenon to die out though? We could be talking decades. I honestly think it'll take some kind of gaming innovation to level the playing field again. It strikes me that CS players are all too lazy to try something new. I did consider that the answer to the question "When will CS die?" is that "It'll die when something better comes along", but frankly, better games than CS existed even before CS was made.

I personally think that only a MOD can take down CS. I'm not entirely sure why, but it just seems to me that even the best retail games don't sell on their merits alone. MODs have the benefit of building upon an already critically acclaimed title, so people get the sense that they are getting more than what the paid for...

For atleast 10 more years as I see it. But I think after playing the same exact damn game since late 1998, it's to move on for christ sake.

Yeah, but believe me, even after playing a game for 7 years some people arent bored of it. I've gotten bored of CS but I still play it once in awhile. I've moved on to Sven Coop, TFC, and some other games.
