It'll all depend on what happens with the court case with Vivendi I guess.

4+ years. VALVe says it wont take as long because they have their engine. But by the time HL3 comes out, HL2 will seem standard. VALVe will want HL3 to be to HL2 what HL2 is to HL1. They will start looking into new technologies to take games to the next level. This will take time.

Thats how I felt after playing HL1. But if they just churned out another game without updating the engine, HL2 would not be what it is. Give HL3 some time and it will be a whole new level of amazing.

I think Valve have the skills to get HL3 out in a year or two. I'd say Source is more than powerful enough for it.

The actual gameplay of HL2 was made in roughly a year, technology and research took the most time.
I'd say 3 years.

Well considering how they are keeping the Source engine and modifying it constantly (similar to Carmack and how Quake went to Quake 2 to Quake 3 to Doom3) I'd say the game should be here in 2-3-3.5 years.

The problem is, they left so much unexplained in Half-Life 2 that they've got loads of ground to cover in HL3 (if it is a trilogy) in which case I'm hoping HL3 will be much longer than HL2.

In which case probably 4+ years.

I'd say 2 years. A year from now HL2 will be stable and the mod comunity will be healthy.

They will already have started before this, so another year to finish it off. I think it may just be an expansion though, Half-life 2: xxxxxxx.

I say half a year to mod the source engine to do more stuff, another half for good multi, and a year and a half for the rest! :E
