Hi guys!!!

Hope that this has not been posted already...

If it has...

YES go ahead and flame me!!! :flame:

If not...COOL!!! :E

Found this at the Russian Half Life2 site:

******** Edited: Don't try get around the censor - warned.

(sorry it won't let me make a direct link...just move the *** over to the dot)

Where did those VALVe guys get the ideal of the striders anyway...from the artist of these photo's?

You decide!!!

From the site:

A certain reader of our site, overlooked to subscribe, has sent the theory telling about those, the origin formidable opponent Gordona Frimena ? Strider whence prevails:

In its opinion workers Valve at creation of this monster were guided by pictures of the artist of El Salvador Distances. And is more concrete ? two well-known products " the Temptation sacred Antonija " (at the left) and " Dream, navejannyj flight of a bee around of a pomegranate, for an instant before awakening " (on the right) which fragments are resulted below.

It looks like a giraffe genetically spliced with an ant.....or a praying mantis.

Either way, the strider should have 4 asses.

Huge spider with 3 legs. That idea has been around forever & I'm sure the idea has been remade a thousand times.

This looks like pointless flame bait.

Try the novel by H.G. Wells - "War Of The Worlds". The martian invaders used giant three legged strider machines described as been similar to a "tripod". They also used a weapon which was called a "heat ray" which would burn everything that was fired upon.

That was QUICK!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the flame "phantomdesign" :flame: ....COOL my first one!!!

Just thought I would try something new...instead of the same old posts!!

I vote War of the Worlds as well. Very similar. :) There is also a short series about tripod conquerers -- can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Yes I had forgotten about War of the Worlds...I haven't seen that movie for about 20 years now!! (no jokes about my age now!!)

Guess I will have to go get it!!!

Thanks for reminding me of that!! ;)

i'm also thinking war of the worlds, also if you remember, most of the Xen aliens in half life have anatomies based on 3s

the houndeyes, the aliens slaves, the alien grunts, the nihilanth, the controllers, the gargasaurs...

so i guess the idea of having a 3 legged monster would fit well with the rest

Yeah, war of the worlds seems like the most immediate resemblance because of its long legs... But I think that the striders were supposed to have long legs to be able to walk in the ocean. There's an interview somewhere that said Valve made Striders to patrol the ocean but they thought it would be fun to put them on land and so they did.

That reminds me of Rendevouz with Rama, the 3 thing. Probably another source of inspiration.

Try "The Tripods". That's the only other series about tripod conquerers I can remember... was made into a TV series once.

I've seen those Eleph-Ant pictures before. I'd say that the Striders were inspired more by the Fighting Machines from The War of the Worlds.

They were inspired by WOTW, no doubt there. Even if they were originally made to patrol coast lines, thats one of the things the martian fighting machines were said to do also

Well, now all this talk of WotW has made me want to get my old Jeff Wayne CDs out...

I have a print of that second image hanging on my wall. It's cut-off in that link. It's called "One Second Before Awakening From A Dream Caused By A Flight Of A Bee Around A Pomegranate". I hadn't seen the first one, I'll have to get that as well...

Is this image from The Tripods?

(adding an end tag checked by 10 char. limit? eek...)

Yes, I do believe that that image was from the tripods, possibly the old British TV series...

And, yes, that does look familiar. I see it every time I open my War of the Worlds CD case...

"The chances of anyone copying WOTW is a million to one they say" ;)

There are loads of images in the manual that comes with the WOTW CD. If I had a scanner i'd scan some more.

There's one of it sinking a ship, would be a cool HL-2 scripted sequence.

That would be illegal, scanning them and posting them. Yeah yeah I know people do it all the time :p but still, don't think we can allow you to put the scans up here, Jeff's a bit too trigger happy about his work, with good reason I guess, so it would be best not to get on his bad side :D

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhlaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

That's mine. It's how they spell it in the lyrics (Kind of.).

Apparently, when the Martians get excited they expel air in a series of hoots...

what is this war of the worlds cd? i read a kids version of the story in grade school and loved it, im thinking about picking up a real copy next time i see it.

The War of the Worlds CD (Two CDs actually.) is a musical version of the story. It has some of the best music I've ever heard. It's a sort of Rock-Opera...

The tripods was such a nice series, and they look exactly like the striders

I'm not sure where they got the idea for the striders, but I once saw a movie on the Sci-Fi channel that was about these U.S. marines in the future. They went to this one planet and on that planet were these things they referred to as "Bugs."
The bugs looked almost Identacle to the Ant Lions. There was one scene in the movie where the marines were holding off this base that was being attacked by thousands and thousands of these "Bugs" that looked like Antlions. At one point while they are holding the base off, two of the bugs jump the wall and take big swipes at the marines with their claw-like legs. They slice like three marine's heads off.

Also in that movie, there is some kind of thing similar to the headcrabs that jumps on people's heads and like pokes a hole in their head and suck the brains out.

It was a pretty graphic movie. I have no idea what it was called, but I think it may have had some kind of influence on how the antlions look.

War of the Worlds - I'm reading it right now!
