The only time I've been able to get a lock pick was in the beginning and during the Thieves Guild initiation. Aren't there any shops that sell them?
BTW, one of the most fun games I've ever played. The world is just as lifelike as Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Some shops sell 1 or 2. The best place is to walk a few minutes out of town and kill bandits/highwaymen.

yeah i had around 30 without buying any. goblins seem to have a lot on them too

I heard that you can't buy torches, can anyone confirm that?

I wish I hadn't thrown my torch the moment I got out of the beginning cave....I've needed it ever since. I'll find one sooner or later. I've a ton of lockpicks, just keep picking them up everywhere...the thieves guild guy sells them as well.

I bought 100 lockpicks from a guy for 5 or 6 gold a piece. If it wasn't a fence, I don't know who it could have been...

There's a guy North of the Imperial City stables that sells them cheap.

it was the guy that you report to when youre joining the thievies guild, but you could only do it when you went to get the diary :(

You can buy lockpicks from all of the Thieves guild fences.

He attacked me for no good reason. Still, he's dead now, and I'm wearing his clothes :p

People you can buy and sell stolen goods to. There's one in Bruma. You can also buy tons of lockpicks from him. He always has 100.

Sweet, thanks. I now have 50 lockpicks and I can merrily steal that treasure on the formerly heavily guarded ship (they got killed by guards when they attacked me) at the Waterfront.

Is there a trick to picking locks or just luck?

Click right as the little thing you push up hits the top of it's chamber

Even "very hard" locks are rather easy once you know how to do it.

I couldn't find him - do I have to be a member of the thieves guild?

He just said... click when the yellow thingy hits the top.
That doesn't always work for me, I don't know if it's random or not

it's not random, it's just about timing.

The speed at which the "yellow thingy" goes up determines whether or not you should click. There are three (maybe four) possible speeds. If it goes up fast it's not going to stay up very long and you'll almost always break a lockpick. The medium speed is a gamble. Just keep pushing it over and over again until it does a slow one, then click. Once you get the hang of it, you can open "Very Hard" locks without breaking a sweat.

I usually save my game before I attempt a lock and hit auto try. It gets it pretty fast with security level 50. Even very hard locks I have gotten on the first attempt with auto.

unlock spells ftw.
QFT.
It's insanely easy to level up with them too, just get an "Open Easy Lock" spell, cast it on any door, unlocked, hard lock etc, w/e, it still gives you the experience!

That's basically what I did in Daggerfall, one just creates a supercheap spell and casts it in his home, they don't have to hit anything etc, one just has to cast'em!

On my new character, I replaced lockpicking with mysticism. The unlock spell is alteration, but I didn't put alteration as a main atribute, because it's so easy to level.

You can always buy lockpicks from the Khajiit in the Dark Bortherhood.

Also, does anyone know where I can get a higher level version of the unlock spell? There are so few precious, useful doors that can be unlocked with Easy Open.

I think I've seen "Open Hard" spells for sale, but never Open Very Hard.
