Most of this community I assume is towards the younger side, but for those of us who are out in the real world, what are you doing with your life? What types of jobs/life do you have and what are your goals and what do you aspire to do?

I work for my own game dev company, working on an unannounced title and keeping afloat with third-party contract work on the side.

My goal - get this damn demo done.

I work for a specialist recruitment agency as a consultant, I very recently got the job after a lot of hard work. (going to train as a forensic scientist in the future).

I work when I'm needed basically and when I have time of from Uni (Studying game development btw). I have no idea what my title is but I guess it's something with "technician" in it. I work with timing equipment for large sporting events, like Vasaloppet (Don't know if it's that known outside the Nordic, but it's 14000+ people), Vätternrundan (over 12 000 people I think), Stockholm Marathon and London Marathon to name a few. My job consists of setting up loads of computers (info, registration etc) in a huge networks, checking so everything works, teach the people using the computers not to **** up, set up and calibrate the timing equipment itself and stuff like that. So if you been to any of these events and someone got your time wrong, that would prolly be my fault :)

However, the pay is very, very good, free travel, free hotelrooms, free food and booze whenever we want. My boss likes giving away beer :) So I can't complain really. The hours are a bitch sometimes though. Can be everything to 1 hour of work to 12 hours of work (same pay though).

It's not something I would like to do in the future though... hence studying game development :)

I want to be a programmer. if that's not possible then developer will do.

I forgot to mention what I do....

Currently I work for Harvard University doing mainly administrative stuff. I am attending HU as a grad student hopefully this coming semester but could be next year. To be honest, I am not completely sure what I want to after that....I probably would of gotten into game design had I learned to program a little earlier.

Although I'm still living at home, and thus being supported by my parents, I do gigs and busking as a session musician. The pay comes in lumps, but it comes in fast enough to be reletively useful for buying games and such. Over the summer holidays I was actually going to look into getting a job at someplace like EB. Does anyone know if they have age restrictions with employment? I heard that due to some R18+ games they will only hire those 18 and over...

I am parking cars as a valet downtown Vancouver. I am going to school for mechanical engineering and I'm not sure but maybe I'd like to get into HVAC (heating ventilating air conditioning) design after I graduate

Productdesign as a profession....Game design and comics as a hobby.
And in between I'm a real lazy dude...;)

Oh BTw...question was where do you work...heh
here and I used to there.

Wow so we actually have a smart person on this forum. Hahvahd, Tyguy, Hahvahd.

I just worked my arse off at college and working at harvard helps too :)

After spending three years at university and getting a good degree, I'm currently waiting tables and serving drinks. I find this rather depressing.

Although mark my words, I'll be a journalist any day now D:

Uni student and work part-time in a Superstore =/

Three years? Doesn't it take four to get a degree? What was your degree? If what you said is true maybe your grades were not that good. Just a thought.

I solicit people for change. Sometimes it's out on the median, sometimes its on the sidewalk. And sometimes, just sometimes... it's in the lobby of a nice building.

LOL, no i'm just kidding. I'm unemployed right now, but when I had a job, I worked in the offices of a local door and window manufacturing company, in the door division.

Well, after i graduated I started bartending and barely worked during the week. :) Im sure if he DID graduate its just taking time to find a good job.

Tyguy how did you end up with that job at Harvard? Is that how you got into grad school? I was told that if you work at an uni they usually let you take courses for free. Is that what you are doing? what are you studying?

Over here, a degree takes 3 years.

Nope. Four years for some degrees - art, foreign languages (although one of those years in a country that speaks the language you're learning) etc. - but for most degrees, or at the very least humanities degrees, three years is the norm in the UK.
And as for my grades not being very good, I got a 2:1 which is the second highest grade one can get, and a first is extremely hard to obtain.

How much is a 2:1 on a 0-100% scale?

Currently I'm working at a internet company call center, it's driving me nuts because I love physical work. I'm wasting away working here :(

One of my favorite jobs I had was touring with a mechanical bull. Hard work though.

Currently I'm saving money to goto school for firefighting. I'm still looking at modeling/acting. If that never takes off, I'll be going to school for Telecommunications & Business Management.

I got a 1st in Physics and now I work as a scientist in a place similar to Black Mesa. D:

probably the fact that a degree isn't a magic pass to employment.

I'm a student, and I don't work.

:)

Looking for a job though.

Any job takes effort, one does not simply walk into one after leaving uni.

I'm a Project Manager for a large multi-utility company in the north west of England.

Basically, i manage a £30m portfolio of civil engineering projects on the water supply network, each ranging in value from ~£500k to ~£10m. :)

Ahh I didn't read the whole original post..I'll add this:

I want to be involved in the running of club nights and such, and eventually own my own chain etc :)

Currently getting a portfolio together with a friend for a monthly club night in my city :)

Well currently nowhere, my last job was pushing carts at a supermarket but I got fed up with my lazy ass coworkers not doing their share of the work and quit. I really saw no reason why I had to do twice the work because everyone else wanted to only do half of theirs.

In any case - nice one. I'm trying to get into recruitment. Who do you work for?
I have my final assessment with a specialist company on Wednesday. Fingers crossed...

For now though I work in correspondence at the Department of Health.
