I just beat the game, but i never saw the blue tentacle that snatches the combine soldier that can be seen on the HL2 website and trailer? Do i have to beat the game on a different difficulty setting? I beat in on normal

They took it out of the game, it's name is the Hydra, probabaly be in an expansion. Sucks, but oh well :)

you need to play it on hard, and you will see the blue tentacle come out of alyx's butt

it was removed from the game by Valve. they should release it as a deleted scene.

Yup, that's a cool scene.

For clarity, is that 'should' being used in the sense that

"Valve should release it as a deleted scene some time in the future" In that it is an expectation,

or

"Valve should release it as a deleted scene, I really wanted to see that hydra" in that it is something you would like to see happen?

That sucks, i though that would be a cool enemy or something, i hate when they do that in games and movies, they show previews of a scene and then in the final version its not there

ya they took out the hyda, plus the docks/strider going in kleiners lab/that level where the guy was fighting striders where you hear citizens running twards you yelling "STRIIIIDEEEEER!!!" and throwing building letters at it :D/that level where the guy was blocking the door with a table (traptown) and combine couldnt get in/the assault rifle with green scope/etc. are all in the expansion (hopefully)

In this sense....(I'm making a "educated guess")

hahaha what's all this talk about an expansion? Did gabe say somewhere an expansion?

well if u look at gabe, isn't the first thing that comes to mind "EXPANSION"? :D

Alright, alright - i'll stop being mean...

they let it out :(
i wish they did't but there where some problems with it.
maybe in hl3 :)

edit: damn and to think the bink movie with the striders where you going down the lift.
i miss that to including traptown
and i wanted to try that to :(

I completed HL2 the other day.

I'd forgotton about the Hydra, I forgotton about the Stryder near the Cinema with the UMF sign (tho that sign does make an appearance). I'd forgotton about Traptown, I'd forgotton about the Docks.

Now you reminded me, I miss them! Basts! Theres almost another game in that lot (sounds like a plan?)

I didnt forget about the stryder in Kleiners lab tho, was waiting for that one but it never happened.

Remember that sweet time/space altering effect that the strider shot that was in the E3 vid? The strider only shoots gunship bullets now... :( O well game still owns

he still shoots that...

Ya, i was just wondering the same thing..

Also, remember at the begining of the game when the transporter malfunctions..and sends you to all kinds of places...remember the one where it drops you into water, and some kind of creature goes to swallow/bite you? That was the ONLY place where we didnt go in Half Life 2, all the other ones we did..the 2 labs, the office, the railway in the citadel (stand up restraint),

What happened to that?

that creature is the ichtyosaur from half-life 1....

but your right, that is wierd how we never eventually ended up in an underwater scene, fighting it.

guess thats what hl3 is for..

Hopefully HL3 will have more of the Xen monsters returning. Maybe the houndeyes could also join the humans. I always thought of them as Xen dogs.

They promised so much stuff, but half of it was freakin' cut.

Those expansions better be good... And contain the stuff we were expecting...

It's still there . . . the Striders just don't use it very often.

I'd forgotten about that. I remember Gabe saying the Ichthyosaur was in HL2, and then thinking where the hell is it . . . because you never encounter it in the game. But yeah, it was in that cutscene. And ONLY in the cutscene. :(

Im not complaining about the thing not being in the game, i dont like being underwater, you cant see too far ahead, and that thing could attack you from so many angles..it freaks me out. I'd rather fight enemies on the horizontal plane :)

What about the scene where you are evading the combine, and you hurl a grenade that blows up a big air conditioner and do other things which caused a big container to land on a bunch of combine soldiers. I believe that is what happened. That scene was pretty cool.

That's Traptown. Also cut.

*sigh* so many things cut or not implemented...

even so, HL2 still rocks!

huh... I must have missed it. I was looking forward to seeing that, guess I'm off to play that level again. :p

Ichthyosaurs

It's been about a year since I saw the HL2 preview video, but there is a creature in the game that could be the Ichthyosaurs you're looking for.

In the Sandtrap section, I was racing along a beach, trying to avoid all the antlions. I accidentally ended up in the water off the shore. I was sitting there in my dune buggy, amazed at the details they had under the water: bubbles floating around me, my bullets were slow-motion with a trail of bubbles, etc. But then, I noticed a bunch of white eels that swam up to me with nasty-looking teeth. They were about 2 feet long, and very quickly killed me!

Ichthyosaurs perhaps? Or something else?

I remember thinking at the time... Geez, Earth has gotten REALLY messed up! Even the ocean is now dangerous.

Those little eel things were in Half Life 1, they're just little eel things. They killed me in Sandtraps, also. Pain.

Traptown wasn't entirely cut - it turned into Ravenholm. Remember they mentioned the "survivalist monk" in the E3 2003 video? There are a few traps in Ravenholm... Just not so many (or at least different) "physics showoff" traps.
The section in that video where Gordon was chased into a building by Combine and he blocks the door off is still there too. There are just no Combine there in the real game.

Im just kind of amazed at the amount of peopel saying that "it sucks that this was cut" or "this better be in a expansion" (or else what??)

Valve cut this stuff for a reason, and didn't they deliver a damn good game? I mean, only Valve know all the little pieces they had, all the outtakes, all the levels they've probably done that we didn't even see in the previews.. and they've pieced together the parts they thought were the best for HL2.

For instance, in Ravenholm for me part of the thrill is that there are no combines around for a quick fix of ammo.. by the end of it I was seriously short on ammo, and it was a blast. Now, imagine if Valve had put in the traptown parts, with all the nifty traps and the combines that fall victim to them.. IMO that wouldn't have been as cool, since it would have made ravenholm a "run of the mill" city-17-esque level. This way it isn't. It's scary :D And threre are still some fun traps to play with! I mean, who wouldn't want to drop a car on a zombie? :D

Oh and the Hydra, sure it was a cool thing, but I actually don't miss it at all :D HL2 rocks!

You guys are saying release it as a deleted scene. The reason valve took it out in the first place is because they couldn't make a well enough combat AI for it. They tried to figure out how it would be the best way to attack and how to kill it and program AI. They just couldn't do it. They cut it. I'm glad they kept the strider though. Im sure its AI was hard too.

If you noticed at e3 03 when they showed hydra scene there is no combat of it. they didn't have any well enough AI to show off at e3.

So far no-one has mentioned the Ice-Breaker, which I've seen in a screenshot (albeit an external view).

Did Gabe Newell not say in an interview that Marc Laidlaw had originally scripted Half-Life 2 to start on the ice breaker?

I'd heard that several of the Valve team had gone to great lengths to recreate the ice-breaker in every detail - even to the point of spending a week onboard collecting data.

It seems a shame to have spent so much time working on a level and then not sharing it with the world.

If no-one has any comments I may email Mr. Newell and inquire about the ice-breaker level.

I never got the M-29

Was that in the game?

That was called "Borealis" and I'm not too sure why it was cut though I think it was sacrificied for the current entry into City 17 (ie, via the train).

They took a lot of stuff out of the final copy...kinda sucks. The game is still good, but meh...My jaws didn't drop to the floor.
