well I figured out why Ive been getting random reboots and freezes in bf2. Well my cpu temprature was at 120c (might have been less since every temprature program i ran showed it about 120)!!!!!! I just got done reapplying arctic silver 5 and now the temps are stable at 32c...wheew hopefully this was the problem. hehe

120c?! That can't have been right. It would blow up.

yea thats what i though, but i do think it was over heating....but i still ahve a problem my comp still freezes sometimes, is it a possibility that its the psu? (powmax 580w 24a 12v+)

580w sounds sufficient in terms of a PSU. What are your other specs? It could be possible that there is too much strain on it. I had a similar problem once, and ended up inadvertently fixing it when I formatted. Also it could be possible that your CPU was damaged by the high temperatures..

How did you know it was 120C? Often temp programs don't pick the right sensor and they then say its the CPU temp or board temp when it really isn't. Most boards today will shut down if it goes above 75C. P4's will first downclock at around 70C.

Granted 500+ Watts is enough, powmax isn't exaclty known for their quality (more their lack of). Testing a different powersupply shouldn't be too hard.

ok well its been fine for the past few hours, but i tried core center, speedfan and mbm5, and when i reapplied my thermal paste, all the programs temp went from 120c to like 32c. Well ill just have to wait and see how it goes.

I've asked several people, and they said that a CPU can withstand up to 125C.

But that would be shit.

he stuck a thermometer in it's ear and read the temp.

ok, i am STILL getting random reboots and freezes... I do not think its the temperatures because my cpu is idle at 34c atm with core center and speedfan...Is it most likely my psu? I might just go ahead and order a nice thermaltake or antec. I just dont understand why everything is so messed up, it was fine a week ago.

Before you go buying a new PSU, I'd recommend trying to find a friend with a spare PSU or one they might let you borrow temporarily. If it is the PSU then that would prove it and then you should buy a new one, however if it isnt a psu problem, then you might just end up wasting your money on a new one and still be stuck with the reboots and freezes.

Yeah that would be best.
Or if you have a computer store near by that doesn't have a restocking fee and lets you return open product for a full refund (compusa). hehe

hehe must be your store then.
I know they used to have a 2week return policy and 15% restocking fee but they chaged that to 21days and no restocking fee. At the store here they just have you fill out a little slip and ask what's the reason. Then they do the transaction and your out.

You always gotta give out your postcode(zipcode) when returning stuff, even when I made a complaint at Asda (our Wal Mart) about a hair in a Mr Kipling cake, eugh.

Just for an exchange they wnted my details.

As for the maximum temperature, a friend of mine showed me a video of i think Toms Hardware lab doing tests to find out how hot a CPU can go. They took two Pentiums and two Athlons and did this:
had the mobo and CPU in view, with Quake III arena on monitor on background showing you a demo or sommin. then, you see them taking off the Heatsink, and for the pentiums, quake just slows down bad as in major frame loss, then they reapply the heatsink and the game continues fine.

shame i couldn't really make out the temperatures of the pentium CPUs

Yah those old AMD boards didn't have any temp protection on them back then. THG has newer videos like that though.

link please? because that wa a very intresting video
