which car for first?

mustangs...ew...one of the ultimate redneck cars, and the v6 nonetheless.

alabama is not a state short of mustangs, and there's no point in buying one unless you buy the v8. I don't even like mustangs, but buying a non-v8 mustang is like buying a 3-series instead of an m3 because of 'gas mileage'.

Except that M3's use an inline six, just like the regular 3-series. With the exception of the M3 GTR of course. And the E90 M3 isn't out yet...so..yeah.

regardless if it's an abbreviation or not it is still a derogatory word for a person of japanese origin. I can accept that you didnt mean it that way, but I just dont like how that word is still casually thrown around ..50 years after the fact
I love how you get all panicky about someone saying "Jap" instead of "Japanese" but have no problem with joking about someone who millions love and respect (Jesus) getting creamed by a bus.

Anyway.

I just got a 94 Mazda pickup truck. It's my dad's old one, runs well but I'm going to have to get it serviced to fix the clutch.
I'd never buy an automatic by the way, not enough control. I <3 standard.
Mileage is great too, and with gas the way it is, I wouldn't have it any other way.

could you tone it down on the racist rhetoric? it's really not necessary

Jap:
n. Offensive Slang

- Used as a disparaging term for a person of Japanese birth or descent.

Are you Japanese? Or are you one of the new breed of people who get offended on behalf of other persons?

I think I'll be offended whenever somebody refers to my people as 'The Brits'. In fact, I'm going to lodge an official complaint against the award ceremony known as 'The Brits', its clearly racist.

Indid, even in French we calle them the Japs, and its not offensive.

This is a thread about cars, make a thread in politics about the correct term for a group of people

ah, comments from the peanut gallery

brits is not equal to jap: apples to oranges ..brits is not a deragatory word.

Brit
n. Informal
A British person

notice the lack of the word "derogatory" in the description?

dalamari: this is was between short recoil and myself ..dont be pointing the derailing finger at me ..they didnt have to comment on something that wasnt directed at them.

Alright, I just found a good civic. it's a 98 with 77k miles for $5,395.

I think this will be my first choice now. Gonna take a friend up there to check it out, if it passes his inspection I will hire a mechanic to check it out and if it passes his inspection ill buy it.

P.S. Japs is nothing but discriminatory and disrespectful. Jesus mud slinging has logic behind it and can make a point. Japs is nothing but discriminatory.

Brits may not be a derogatory word in your world, but I don't allow myself to be swayed by whatever I read in a dictionary. If I found the term 'Brits' to be offensive, than nothing you quote could change that, and my objection would stand.

'Japs' is an abbreviation of 'Japanese'. How can an abbreviation possibly be insulting, unless the intended target is not actually Japanese in origin?

The word 'N1gg3r' is extremely offensive when used in certain contexts. However, when used as a colloquialism between black people, its not seen as such. What does your dictionary say about that?

let's further bog this thread down in semantics shall we?

heaven forbid we consult or be constrained by the obvious limitations of a dictionary ..why dont we throw out the laws of grammar while we're at it? (is that enough dripping sarcasm? cuz I can lay it thicker than that) ..said that be ..you live not in vacuum. Words you do not own, nor do you decide their meaning. Saying a word has a seperate meaning (for you alone) apart from the rest of society is rediculous. It's like saying any random word can be an insult and that all words have the same potential to be offensive. PEANUTS! LAMPSHADE!! anyone offended yet?

jap is not an abbreviation for japanese at least not to japanese ..see japan isnt called japan in japan (much like spain isnt called spain by spaniards) ..translated into the cyrillic alphabet it's spelled Nihon or Nippon. Jap is exclusively a western term for people of japanese descent, it is considered by them as derogatory ...the japanese equivilant for us is gaijin

a dictionary is not an encyclopedia

I fail to see how this relates to the use of the word jap ..you'd have a point if japanese people called themselves Jap but they most certainly dont. In fact most asians see it as a negative:

JAP: Avoid. A slur under all circumstances and often applied to anyone of Asian heritage (see CHINAMAN, elsewhere in this glossary). Like other racial and ethnic epithets, it has a poisonous history but one that may be fading from memory. The disingenuous say it applies only to the brutal Japanese officers of World War II, rather than the entire Japanese people (compare "gook" under RACIAL SLURS). In John W. Dower's 1987 study of World War II racism called "War Without Mercy: Race and Power in the Pacific War," Dower cites a British general, Sir Thomas Blamey, as typical in his view of the meaning of the word. In an interview in The New York Times, General Blamey said, "We are not dealing with humans as we know them. We are dealing with something primitive. Our troops have the right view of the Japs. They regard them as vermin."

glirk: wise choice ..a little high in the mileage but it seems like a fair deal ..make sure a mechanic looks at it ...japanese cars tend to blow timing belts. You should change yours at about 90,000 (or just get a mechanic to check for cracks) it's a relatively inexpensive maintenance that most honda owners do (I've changed one in my old honda prelude) ...you dont want to break the timing belt ..it could seize your engine

No, just stop. All of you.

Civic looks nice, just make sure you get a good mechanic to inspect it. My cousin has had one for a long time now and is pretty happy with it.

tell that to everyone else ..I made ONE comment directed at a single member (who hasnt even responded back, probably because of all the flaming) ..yet anyone with a chip on their shoulder/axe to grind sees fit to comment on something that doesnt involve them in the least ...yet you ask ME to stop flaming? that's ****ing rich

Sorry if it wasn't clear, but I did mean it for EVERYONE going on about subjects not at all related to cars. And I didn't say to stop flaming, there really wasn't any of that. I just wanted EVERYONE to STOP with this stuff, take it to politics if you must.

Edited for clarity.

why not ask everyone to just take it to politics? I made my comments to Short recoil, no one else, yet people still feel the need to throw their 2 cents in regardless if they know the full story ...this gets really really tiresome ..I cant say anything without half a dozen wise asses with axes to grinds twist and reinterpret my words to mean all sorts of far-fetched whacko things. After awhile it gets grating

Yeah the mileage is a bit high but for my price range it's about the best ive seen and not to mention on this reliable of a car its a pretty good deal.

I know a local mechanic my step bros have used that charges $50 per car to inspect. He is very very thorough so I will have him take a look at it as soon as I can get my loan. Thanks everyone for the help and advice...it helps a lot when I know nothing about cars.

Then perhaps you shouldn't presume to dictate to others what is offensive and what isn't.

Especially when nobody is actually offended.

I had a Vauxhal corsa for my first car, it served me well, i think it makes a very good first car. Now i have a peugeot 206cc, which would have made an even better first car, but i couldnt afford the insurance till i had 1 years no claims
