I'm having a hard time to answer this question. Which game comes closer to being real life graphics: the unbelievingly detailed world of D3 or the gritty slum feel of HL2.

I'm leaning slightly to HL2.

PS: not sure if I got the poll option right if not just post your reply.

HL2 definitely has a more plausible look.
That's not say Doom 3 doesn't look great (the marine model is really well done), but overall.. I'd say HL2

no doubt HL2, it has a more realistic feel and look to it.

Neither. They are games. Nothing compares to real life.
EDIT: I know this sounded rash, but I hate threads like this. They always turn into "HL2 is better than Doom 3" threads.

It's not saying "which one is real life!?" It's asking which gets CLOSER to real life..

HL2 looks closer to the real world.. but Doom 3 looks more detailed. If the Doom 3 textures had more grit, then D3 would probably win.

Doom 3 impressed me a few years ago, but now it doesnt stand up against these new shooters as well. I think far Cry looks nicer than D3. Doom3 does look nice to me, just not realistic by any means. HL2 on the other hand strides for a realistic yet simple look.

FC looks nowhere as realistic as D3.. well, the player models, anyway

HL2 looks more realistic in a sense. D3 looks better

I wonder what Doom 3 would look like if they tried to copy City 17. I am willing to bet that it would look really good. My point, both engines are perfectly capable of rendering whatever they want to. With that said, I like the realistic art direction of Half-Life 2 more than the artistic direction of Doom 3.

hmm.. i'll wait and play the games before i answer this question.
right now obviously it looks like HL2 is more realistic... but then again we are only judging my screen shots mainly.. and thats like judging a book by its cover.. :p

In reply to Dr Freeman

And if that book is a Playboy 50th Annivesary Collectors Edition?

Half life 2 I think this has better graphics. I have not seen one screen shot of DOOM 3 outside.

Too bad the HL2 one is concept art, while the Doom 3 one is in-game..

BTW, you're on Mars. Do you REALLY expect to be outside alot? :|

Doom 3 looks a lot better I think...Half-Life 2 is more gritty and realistic, but it's a also a bit flat and uninspired compared to Doom 3. Just look at that lighting! Who cares if it's all plastic? It's pretty plastic!

/me drools

Graphics don't do a whole lot for me. Doom 3 looks nice, but I'm not entirely sure what it adds to the game itself, or than a slightly more immersive feel.

However, HL2 has pretty good graphics, nearly as good as Doom 3's with all the fantastic facial animations and physics to boot.

I think I'd say HL2.

I like the look of Doom 3 better. Realistic lighting isn't always better.

For example the film grain they used for Saving Private Ryan looks nothing like reality but creates an awesome atmosphere for the film.

Half-life 2 screenies suck, but that doesn't reflect anything.

I've seen bith the E3 2002/2003 coverages, and HL2 totally blows out doom 3 out of the water in realism.

Doom 3 may have great lighting - but in terms of realism it just doesn't compare with HL2 for a number of reasons. The question of the thread is which is more realistic, not which has better graphics.

Half-Life 2 looks more real. The architechture and details matter a great deal. Hmm. Shit, I think that rhymed.

I think a non-fanboy person would not choose any game for being more realistic. So im saying they both have their looks, and they both look f*cking awesome and realistic. Im gonna gonna get them both..

Neither of them do. The HL2 setting may be more realistic, but the monsters aren't. Ok, it's got physics, but so does doom, and having 'the manipulator' doesn't make them more realistic.
About graphics detail, I guess HL2 will have the details needed to make it a convincing city, and doom the same for a spacelab.
So, i'd say they're both very unrealistic, but in a different way. And i like it like that, gives me 2 great, different games to play, instead of 2 looking alike and focussing on the same.

Half-Life 2 is more Realistic compared to Doom 3. But how can they be compared HL2 is in a European City whilst Doom 3 is set in a furturistic Space Station thingy.

The only thing I've got against Hl2 is Headcrabs. The only thing I have against Doom 3 is the plastic look.

I dare say that a soldier in a gasmask is slightly more realistic than a zombiedemon from hell.

The manipulator has one thing in common with a spacelab: both are imaginary. It's very clear that HL2 has a more realistic setting.

:dozey: I agree, I think Half Life 2 has more detailed models and physics that surpass Doom III's from what we've seen.

I don't really get your statment, are you saying that HL2 doesn't have real monsters? Cause their from another world and not suppost to be realistic. If valve wanted real looking monster they would've mutated a bunch of monkeys and we all saw how that turned out *cough* FAR CRY *cough*. ;)
