I have the choice of either a(n):
-Power Color Radeon 9600 XT 256 MB ram AGP 8x -$245 CDN
-Power Color Radeon 9800 PRO 128 MB DDR ram AGP-$285 CDN
-MSI GFX FX5900 XT-VTD 128 MB ram-$285 CDN

Which one is the best in which I'll have no regrets?

9800pro, without question. you'll get the most bang for your buck outa that card.

9800 Pro without a doubt...the FX series won't touch the 9800 Pro in hl2 ;)

Actually its not that bad. But damn HST Tax (15%) really sucks.

Nice choice.
While the 6800 does perform better on average there are enough cases when it doesn't and you saved quite a bit of money with the 9800Pro.

This will give you an idea of how close they compare for performance.
1280x1024
1600x1200 AA/AF

Woah New Brunswick, how much did you pay for shipping from NCIX?

it's usually in the $10 range (plus another $10 for insurance ...yes you need it) ...plus you dont pay provincial sales tax ...so tax is only 7% GST

NCIX is an excellent place to buy ..half my computer comes from NCIX

Not to hijack this thread but, is a 9800 SE better than a 9600 XT?.

Yeah, you don't need the ultimate edition. Very heavy and it can run hotter with out a nice fan to keep it cool.

If it's a 256bit memory bus it is very similar in performance and could be softmodded into a 9800 with 8 pipelines.
The 128Bit memory bus, which is most of the ones I have seen in the past, perform below the 9600XT.

Oh shit. I found out that my graphic card isn't the Radeon 9600 PRO.
It's the Radeon 9600.

I've been getting messages like ," Going from a 9600 PRO to a 9600 XT isn't really worth it." Now I think I should get the 9600 XT 256MB ram.

I'll add my vote to the 9800 Pro to further reassurance.

Yeah the 9800 pro is really fast. But don't get a Powercolor, get an MSI or Sapphire. People have had problems with a lot of Powercolor cards, they're not really a good brand. The MSI is really an underclocked 9800xt, it has the R360 core so that's the best choice.

Powercolor's are underclocked. Like others have said, OC'ing it fixes that :p

PS. My friend asked me this today, it was hard convincing him to buy a 9800 because most benchmarks have the 5900 on top. The one thing is that it's future proof (9800 Pro).

The MSI and GigaByte ones don't have the 9800 PRO 128MB.

The power colour one is $285 CDN.

Ok well get the Powercolor. But if you have any problems with it return it. It's just that there have been a lot of reports of people who have bought Powercolors and had some problems. But there have been others who haven't had any problem at all.

Since we're all on about video cards anyways.... I am on a seriously hosed budget here. I'm looking to upgrade my video card, but I have an older 240W power supply. At what point (card wise) will this start to be a serious issue?

I know nothing about the power supply/card issue, and there are some fairly intelligent folks in here, so I thought I'd ask y'all. :)

Well your power supply will work fine with a 9600xt. But anything higher, and it probably won't work. You should get a 350 watt power supply, that'll be fine with any video card today. Just make sure it's not a cheap bad one. Antec and Thermaltake make the best, get one of them.
