As there's some of us that wish for Xen aliens to return sometime and that EP2 seems a good place to do so, I wonder which unused HL1 enemies (including the Icthyosaur) are most worthy of returning. Let the debate commence!

PS: Multiple answers for the poll are allowed.

I am almost certain the mini striders are in fact mechanised houndeyes. The biology is too similar.

People would refute me saying that because its called a "mini-strider" then it must be a smaller version of the "strider", but there are obvious differences in their construction that people will eventually have to wake up to.

Biggest difference is that there is no underslung cannon on the mini strider, and that the mini has massive eyes whereas the normal sized strider has almost no eyes. It looks like a crab.

All these changes in strider design point towards it becoming more of a Houndeye, from what we saw im HL1.

If you disagree, then wait till hl2 ep2, i guarantee someone will say houndeye.

i know it sounds crazy.....but does anyone else see two eyes on each side of the "head" of the mini-strider? about where bullsquid eyes are? but if it's a combined-bullsquid...why the third leg....

prlly houndeye's......sure hope we see some synth's but with the citadel blowing up i imagine they all got killed......

wonder if we'll see anymore combine soldiers? doubt it...

Bullsquid.. s frohman can return his things to Baney :D

I think the mini-striders are more like the "Combined" version of the houndeye.

They have some kind of sonic attack - I saw it in the GCF a few days ago.

Synthified houndeyes = win :sniper:

Meh, I was hoping these Hunters (as called in the latest PCGamer article on EP2) would have served in some role as the infantry of the Combine forces back in the Seven Hours War. It would have ruled out the Synthified Houndeye scenario, but I wouldn't mind the Houndeye approach if they still have their classic sonic attack. I'm sure that sooner or later, we'll see real Combine soldiers rather than the Overwatch garrision forces we've been fighting so far.

looking at the Ep2 Article it talks about the Hunter having facial expressions, in the sketches you can see the big jaw under the.. eyes? what ever those two blue dots are, it mentions grinning and such actions to fit its mood, don't remember houndeyes having a large jaw, but again, these could be hybrids so I'll shut up

You forgot Assassins.

Also, ministrider is Gordon from the future.

werent the assassins for HL2 like the Elite combine but feminine with like a sniper rifle, I remember that art somewhere

The Houndeye's jaw was located at the bottom of its body.

I thought they used a digestive fluid like an insect
Take a look at the Houndeye model then with HL Model Viewer. You'll find its jaw, along with an eating animation as well. ;)

Neat, I always assumed cause that bug like eye with would eat like a fly or something haha

Icthyosaur sucks... it was annoying in HL1 and I think it would be in HL2.

I think it was pathetic cause it lacked movement, if they could add more animation and such then it would be better

well fish move very smoothly and in an almost agile way... I think it would be very difficult even today to mimic the movement to be impressive or convincing enough.

well mainly I mean it looked like a screaming statue, Its been long since I played HL1, did the arms and mouth move at all? ... wait now I'm having memories of it in HL2 ... where was that *picks at brain*

...put my vote on the Tentacle only because it required completely different tactics to handle. Houndeyes, bullsquid, icthyosaur (to a lesser extent) required that you dodge them long enough to kill them. A well equipped soldier who knew what he was doing could handle them easily. I admit it was quite fun, but the tentacles were like a special kind of environmental hazard. They could use slightly more speed, enhanced hearing or somthing along those lines to make them a bit more challenging, but they get my vote.

Tossup between Bullsquid and Houndeye.

Snarks are good weapons, but I didnt really like fighting them.

I dunno what Gargantuans were, but I like the name, so that's my vote.

Big blue flamthrowing bad asses. Also had a bright red eye and could kick cars.

Striders are Biomech... Hunters do not look biomech to me... anyway like said before this could be a beta only... houndeye, not the least bit bonvincing...

Gargantuas = Win

I would love to see one of those things in a revamped Half-Life 2 form. If some time in Episode 2, a massive, pissed off gargantua comes out at me, I will be much please-ed.

I know I'm not the only one who wants to see one or two gargantuas crash through a bunch of Combine, roasting troops and toppling Striders.

Houndeye
Tentacle
Ichthy
Gargantua

I'd bet money that the Hunters are synthed-up Houndeyes. Some definite physical similarities. The bit about emotions seems to reinforce this, as I always found the Houndeyes to be the most emotional creatures, what with their yipping, retreating, whining, and so on.

Tentacle would also be cool, but I doubt it will happen.

Ichthy... Come on, people. There's water. They're going to come back sooner or later.

Now, the Gargantua is #1 on my wishlist. I would love to see one of those things pummeling the crap out of a strider. You were originally supposed to see one in Half-Life 2's beginning train ride, but it sadly got cut.

Hell, I'd like to see all the old enemies again. But that would be unreasonable, and I know that a lot of such cameos would just be pointless or nonsensical.

Garg for me! just hope the combine hasn't tamed them, wanna see garg(s) vs striders ^^

houne eye and bukksquid are in half-life 2 substance, that oh so shitty mod because i am up my own arse

Bullsquid
Tentacle
Ichty
Gonarch
Gargantua

Gargantua comes first on my list. I just don't understand why you all love the houndeyes so much they're lame IMO.

Bullsquids and Ichthyosaurs need to return. Simple. Gonarch would be pretty awesome too.

Other than that, no real need for anymore.

Houndeyes are cute and I want gordon to have one as a pet, resting beside him after its all over as he sits in an old lazy boy chair smoking a cigar and shotgun in lap, and Alyx cleaning his new home, as she gets upset and yells at him to get off his ass and help, telling him that he does nothing, and gordon just gives her a cold stare...

It's a bit of a small body for a houndeye, isn't it? but even so, that's a pretty good guess if ya ask me. In the ep2 trailer, the hunter jumps down in front of you and moves forewards. This, and the fact that the combine shock troop was a failed concept, and there's no visible projectile weapon on it...
Could be a Houndeye

Or could it be yet another alien creature?

I wanna see some of those synths we saw in the citadel during the first fly-through. The plot's coming closer to open warfare soon, so we can look forward to those nice big chunky Mortar synths, and those marvellous crab synths...

And I wanna see more Xenofauna!! Houndeyes, Bullsquid, lurking Ichtyosaurs, Gargantuas and all that jazz.

Here's a thought... Headcrab synth

I think the body size is right. The legs have just been lengthened. We don't know how altered in appearance these creatures are after turning into synths, so it's hard to say for sure.

Or like stalkers, with all their innards removed. I dunno about anyone else, but I thought the Houndeye were a bit pudgy. Fair bet that it could be a Houndeye, but I wanna see the original yellow pikachu-esque version too.

What about a triumphant return of the Vortigaunt slaves? Like the poor bugger at the trainstation in Point Insertion? Vort vs. Slave Gaunt?
