Here are the contenders for the logo I'm doing to go on my final year university project website... which do you guys think is the better of the two?

I think the logo is better in the second, but there is a better contrast in the first. It might help to see it in the context of a whole page.

Oh, and perhaps it should be "Rome, Italy." ? It looks a little questionable right now.

first one. Showing the whole thing guitar isnt as artsy

For imagery, the one on the left. More interesting composition. The guitar on the right is too small, fiddly, and gets lost.

As for overall design, sorry to be blunt but the idea is kinda lacking in originality - the old two tone basic arial-esque font brand name has been done to death, and there are far too many blue websites in the world in my experience. having said that though, it is clean and contemporary, and I don't dislike it.

The strapline under the logo is tiny. Would the site copy be the same size? would it all resize well for sight impaired users? if not you are risking mr and mrs lawsuit writing you a nice little letter.

Also, the logo might look ok for 72dpi but would it appear in print anywhere? would it work well as a branding in different formats and on different fields? could it translate as letterhead and business card imagery? all stuff to consider.

edit: just seen the 2 full page images. That blue looks dangerously close to being a big colourblind no-no...

First one defenently, the second is too normal.
To make it look more guitariz put another guitar behind the text in the middle.

Thinking of what CR0M said, you'll want the logo in vector if you're doing more than the website. (which it may very well be, but it's something to keep in mind) Also, I agree that the second one just makes for a better composition overall.

I liked the first one when viewing them on their own. But I prefer the second one on the website.
