I am currently with pipex, have been for nearly a year, and up untill recently, was happy. However, now, I am pissed off. Aside from the shambles that was the MAX upgrades (Which are STILL not avalible in my area), and the fact that they have traffic control in place that means if anyone in my home puts on a torrent, pipex throttles my entire connection to 20KBs, I have also not been able to get any more than 30-40 KBs from anywhere outside the UK, and ALL game servers outside the UK have been unplayably laggy. And this on a 2meg connection.

Anyway, the point of this thread is this: Pipex is out, someone else is in, but I don't know who. So I turn to you, good people of HL2.net, recommend me an ISP.

It must have the following:
Unlimited bandwidth (Fair usage policy accepted)
8meg option without LLU
NO traffic control/shaping, except during peak hours. I can accept not running torrents between 6pm and 12pm.
and a short contract period. Preferably monthly, but 3-6 months is ok.

I realise this is a tall order, as I have had no luck finding this myself. So, does anyone know of any magical ISP that can cover this? I realise it may cost over the odds, but I am after a quality service.

PS. Everyone who lives in the UK knows that UK ISP's suck balls. Can anyone who is not from the UK and dosen't know anything about UK ISP's pleeeease not clutter the thread up with how crap our ISP's are please?

I am with BT, 3 years now with no problems,

my current speed is 670kbyte download and 49kbyte upload

8mbit connection,

but it has a problem, that is the speed drops to 250kbyte during peek hours (because 90% of BT exchange are still sync with the new speed).

this problem is getting fixed by the end of summer if not the end of this year.

Appreciate that mate, but if it was that easy, I wouldn't have posted this. BTs got a bandwidth limit, they traffic shape (I know they say they don't, but never the less), and its a 12 month min contract.

Like I say above, the ISP must have the things I listed at the top, otherwise they are no better than pipex

Seems like BT got a major backbone problem. A connection shouldnt go down just because its peakhours. Also, it seems like your normal download speed is bottlenecked by something.

Sorry for hijacking your thread alittle Link, but do anyone got a chart or anything over the internet structure of the UK? I'm interested in looking into it.

Cheers Gorgon, I already had a peak on there, the list halpful, but it won't let you filter by bandwidth limits or traffic throttling.

Yeah, a friend whos on eclipse suggested I look at them. Do they traffic shape at all? Looking at T&C's, it says that p2p stuff gets a lower priority, but its very vague? How do you find torrents outside of peak times?

Comcast, I HAIT THEM, I HAIT THEM SOOO MUCH, THEY RANDOMLY DISCONNECT ALL THE FRICIN TIME THEY TOOK OFF MY INTERNET FOR A WHOLE FUKIN 2 WEEKS AT ONE POINT AND DIDNT REFUND ANYTHING

yeah torrent client's encrypt the traffic so ISP can't distinguish between normal packets and torrent packets. Eclipse option 4 looks very cool, the link is provided by badger look up.

Thanks for readin the first post. gtfo.

Gordon - The tracker data goes unencrypted unless the tracker supports it. Its enough for an isp to pick up on.

A work colleage of mine uses them.. he has their buisness Option 1 package - he's been running a torrent server which uses a lot of bandwidth. He's said they've been great.

I'm on plus.net now, and while I'd recommend them, I don't like the fact that they traffic shape.. however it's never really affected me, aside from one month (I used about 100gigs of traffic that month - :) ) - now it's all back to normal
