Which Mods do you Recommend?

I have Half-Life 1 and only have 2 Mods to play and they are Counter-Strike and Azure Sheep!

Sven-Coop and Natural Selection are some very good.

There are dozens of kickass HL1 mods, but I don't know if many of them still have players. SC and NS are both definitely still popular, also check out The Specialists.

There was also a mod I would've recommended called Haunted, but now that the site Espace Mod is gone I don't know where to find it. I miss that site. There was no better list of singleplayer mods than that place, and now I've gone and forgotten dozens of SP levels.

As far as multiplayer mods go, you're going to have a time of it finding mods that people are still playing, like Ennui said. Team Fortress Classic, The Specialists, Natural Selection, Counterstrike 1.6...I have, at times, caught people playing Ricochet. But really, there's not a lot of people still playing HL multiplayer games.

You know as much as everyone hypes this one, and as much as I hate zombies, I just couldn't really get behind it. I'll be honest, I only even put it in my list because I figured people would throw a fit if I didn't mention it at all.

POV (Point of View)
You play a Vortigaunt, or more specifially, a new breed called a Super-Slave. The story is told in the form of the protagonists journal entries, forty in all. You can only use Xenian weaponry (six weapons in all, IIRC). A good mod, but very occationally annoying. For story nerds it also has some interesting theories on Xen lifeforms.
