I enjoyed GTA 1 and 2.

The series lost some of it's simple charm in moving to 3d - and the driving became less enjoyable imo (of course, many other areas are much improved)

GTA 2 was very clever. If they could work in the kind of free-form experience you were presented with by the respect system into the sort of story-driven game presented by the last 3 GTA games then it'd be one of the most free-form, perfect gaming experiences of all time.
