i was thinking of getting one, but many people seem to have pentium 4's. which pentium 4 would the xp 3000 be equivelent to?

Im not familiar on how AMD runs, but i believe AMD XP 3000 would run as fast as a 3.0ghz.

It would be as fast as a 3.0ghz, and cheaper. But I suggest getting an Athlon 64 2800+. They're only $140 and much better than any Pentium 4 or Athlon XP. They're the top processor right now.

I would say a 3000+ is more equivalent to a 2.8c or even a 2.6c .

It depends on what it is for. I agree Overall the P4 800FSB are better than the Athlon XP series of compariable models.

Although you can't say across the board as it depends on application. There are a number of applications that use much more CPU power and are not dependent on the sub system which show the Athlon XP in good light against the P4 800FSB.

But you don't look at model numbers when buying a CPU. You look at a price range and the performance of similarly costing CPUs which does match between P4 800FSB to AXP CPUs in the applications you speak of.

For the 150$ price range and above I would highly suggest an Athlon 64.
Athlon 64 2800+ Retail start at 149$ at Newegg, which will be better than any of the Athlon XP or Pentium 4 CPUs under 200$, especially for gaming.

AMD cpus generally tend to run hotter than its Intel counterpart. My P4 3.0ghz ht cpu is running at 30 degrees celsius (sp?) right now. When I play heavy gpu intensive games, it only goes to 38-40c. So yay, go me...

i have an amd xp 2400 now, but was gonna go to a xp 3000 (for amd 64 im gonna get a whole new rig, HOPEFULLY w/ SLI). its $160.

also going from a 9500 pro -->6800 non gt, and adding some ram for a whole gig of pc2100.

any input on this? would this be a worthwile increase, or should i just wait and save for a 64 rig altogether?

Pentium 4 is STILL the fastest chip on the market, AMD is getting very close but P4 is still king. But I admit, AMD does have budget CPUs that dish out a little more performance in certain apps....although I would much prefer my P4EE to any Athlon64

Pre athlon 64 it was intel that was king.... now its AMD that reigns supreme as its latest socket 939 FX53 CPU beats intels P4EE in the majority of tests!

from THG..
A look at the benchmark results reveals that there are only few areas where Intel dominates. While the synthetic benchmarks often speak in favor of Intel's 3+ Gigahertz chips, there are only few real-life applications left that run better with Intel inside: audio/video encoding and some rendering applications. Games and multimedia applications have already been a domain of AMD's Athlon64, and the new Socket 939 processors underscored that fact.

Note the only tests where intel conquers are the office application and synthetic benchmarks... not like i use any of them!

Still living back in the days of the old AMD thunderbird or thoroughbred A cores?
Checked up on the newer Northwood and Prescott cores vs the Barton and Hammer cores with cool&quiet?

But anyway, tempeture doesn't really matter. :)

Actually, against popular belief, the AMD XP 3000+ sucks. It's, at the very highest in performance, equivilent to a 2.6 ghz Intel.

The AMD XP3000+ would be equivilant to about a 2.6 P4, whilst the 3200+ is around the level with a 2.8 Ghz P4, i thought anway.

Well I spent a WHOLE lot less for my 3.2C than I did for my FX-53 and my 3.2C RAPES the FX-53 even when OCed. I use my 3.2C for gaming.

You must have done everything right building your P4 while picking the wrong stuff for the FX53 box.
My friends highend P4 system doesn't do quite as good as my system for frame rate and playability.

Odd Asus, they didn't say waht motherboard they chose, what BRAND of memory, what video card, or anything specific in the benchmarks....that and half those benchmarking tools aren't widely common or accurate, I got mixed results upon trying "Auto Gordian Knot" which doesn't ensure accuracy.

Yeah I find all the standard benchmarks a real drag. I mean, 3D Mark, Aquamark? Never heard of them... NOT RELIABLE I SAY!!! Tool....

Your blinded by your love for intel... check the rest of the review...

Well next time i upgrade I'm going for AMD, it's time I switched :)
