Well, since my sister is taking away our only system (a gamecube) to college, I was going to get my dad one of the older consoles, (an xbox or a PS2) for father's day, so he would have something to play until the wii comes out. (he has always been a die-hard nintendo fan for some reason)

So the question is, which one do I get? I haven't been following either console at all for the past five years, and both look equally better than our pitiful gamecube....
I was considering an X360 but I don't really have the money to pay for it right now.

Xbox, doi !!

It has both Half-Life 2 and Halo 2 - the ultimate FPS tag team :)

its too bad my dad utterly despises FPS games though. His favorite games, if it is any cosolation, have been the Zelda series and an old N64 game called Vigilante 8. He also liked the battletanx series. So basically he likes action/adventrue RPGs and Twisted Metal type games.

We're talking about consoles. FPS and consoles go together like Stern and Gh0st.

PS2 for the selection of games that Xbox can't even come close to.

If he likes Zelda, Shadow of Colossus for PS2 is supposed to be similar... yes? I haven't played it so I can't really comment.

PS2 in this case. A huge variety of games with many of the absolute best games this generation being $20 and unlike Microsoft, Sony is still officially supporting the PS2 well into next year (games like Okami and Rogue Galaxy and God of War 2 come to mind as standouts). MS has officially stopped supporting the original xbox just like they are quitting Win98 support early. What other company could afford to sink $7 billion+ into a cause over the course of 5 years and still not see $.01 of their ROI???

The x-box is better value for your money when it comes to hardware and it has great online support. I personally bough a ps2 because it had by far the most exclusives I liked. But if you're dad is not a hardcore gamer there are enough game on the x-box to satisfy him and their online capabilities should make them last longer.

Nope, they are nothing alike at all.

If he likes Vigilante 8 (which I do), he might like the Twisted Metal series (which I don't). I think it's on PS2.

Id say Xbox, i have a Ps2 and im sick of it.
But yes Metalgear ftw!!

How easy is it to get an Xbox now that the Xbox360 is out? I know some stores only care the newest.

>_> Anyone want to buy an XBox Crystal off me with two controllers, one official S, one unofficial and Halo 2 and Burnout 3? I need to sell it soon.

I'd definately go with the PS2, without a doubt. Shadow of the Collosus (and I hear Ico as well, haven't played Ico yet) are ridiculously good, although I'm not sure how it compares to Zelda (don't have much experience with Zelda). Shadow is very unique, you spend the game hunting 16 collosi and it's like a puzzle trying to figure out how to defeat them. There's a lot of artistic touch in the game, and it's hard to describe it...best you experience it yourself.

edit: Not to mention Sony still supports PS2 like Victim said, you'll get more longevity out of the console and have a much wider / better selection of games.

I'd say it depends.

On one hand, the Xbox has the better graphics and also has a built-in hard drive, meaning you won't need to buy any memory cards. I think the game selection on the Xbox is sufficient enough to have plenty of worthy games. It also has far better on-line gameplay.

PS2 however, does have more software to choose from.

Id say it should come down to specific games. You mentioned he likes Twisted Metal. That is a Sony game, but I doubt you can find this game. I've never seen it sold in stores. When I bought my PS2, I could have gotten it for free if I would have noticed the coupon that came with the system. By the time I saw this coupon, the deal had expired, and like I said, I have never seen this game for sale.

Personally, I'd trade either system for a Gamecube... but that may just be because this is the only system I don't have anymore. The Gamecube has many unique titles too.. and you said he prefers Nintendo games.

Gamecube.

Get him his own Gamecube AND and DS Lite and a few games to go along.
