Who actually has a HD-DVD / Blueray player?

Do you have a HD-DVD or Blueray player?

Not until HD screens and players come down in price... so maybe in a year or 2.

Yes, a PS3.

I only started watching/collecting Blu-ray discs for it over the Christmas break. I got Casino Royale, Black Hawk Down, Planet Earth, and 2 HDScapes about Hawaii and the Southwest. All stunningly beautiful.

Oh, and the Blu-Ray boxes just look so much cooler than the HD-DVD boxes. :E

The leap from sd to hd has impressed me considerably more than vhs to dvd. It all depends on the size of your screen and how close you sit to it.

There's more detail, superior colours, richer blacks, greater contrast - it's better in every way. I find the difference even more pronounced than these screenshots suggest, with dvd looking downright fugly and Blu-ray/HDDVD looking like a window into the movie.

I've had a PS3 for about a year and have just recently started using the Blu-Ray player. Once Blockbuster started renting them I used that a lot. Now with the format war coming to a close I've bought my first Blu-Ray movies - Blade Runner Final Cut and 2001.

Blu-ray as a PS3.

But I don't have a HDTV yet.

EDIT: And Blu-Ray is a superior format, the fact that you need two HDDVDs to watch a full move turned me off incedibly.

When did this happen?

HD DVD-ROM has a single-layer capacity of 15 GB, and a dual-layer capacity of 30 GB.

Because a Full-HD entire movie is larger than 30 GB.

Is it? Regardless I haven't heard of films on HDDVD being on 2 discs.

Doesn't matter how much better it looks, I see no point in going HD until the 'war' ends.

Uhhh, no. That's false. Further, as has been said numerous time, layering has eliminated the capacity gap, for now. Tri-layer HDDVD, I believe.

Further, the "superiority" (higher capacity and bitrate) of Blu-Ray still hasn't presented itself in the form of better picture/sound. Any differences are marginal and, imo, unperceptable.

Wow. New word from CES is that this year PSP/PS3 owners will be able to copy movies from their Blu-ray discs to the PSPs via the PS3! Sounds awesome to me. Their own digital distribution model (sort of). Would boost Blu-ray sales I bet. Very interesting indeed.

The second one is probably the one that shows the difference best. TBH though, Im not sure I want to be able to see all the wrinkles and pores in actor's faces. Plus I think when in motion you're not going to even notice much of it.

I dont have either player, and dont plan to get one until the war is over, and they stop making movies on standard dvds. Of course, the war's going to go on for a long time, since everyone's got a wait and see attitude, and everyone's waiting to see which one wins.

I would say the internet could possibly be the fuhrer of formats if only broadband was more available and the selection was larger. This comment I read at rottentomatoes.com pretty much wondered why we still use a format that can easily be ruined with a tiny scratch. I would definitely hold out on both formats if you have high speed. Content on the internet is becoming more readily available since mainstream media is finally embracing the internet after realizing it was competition.

Now I just need Spitzer and his broadband distribution committee, which is most likely a way for these dousch bags to make more money, to get things rolling for us shit kickers living in rural 'merica.

I don't really notice the difference between HD and normal. I was kinda disappointed when I saw HD for the first time.

Same here until i saw it side by side or with a game.

These pictures do not do it justice IN ANY WAY!

HD really kicks in after 40'' screens. @ 60'' its unbelievable.

100% true. "Blu-ray/HDDVD looking like a window into the movie." 100% how i feel

The war is over. Paramount and Warner Brothers are moving to BlueRay. /war

I wish.
If only Warner had made their decision sooner, Paramount might not have switched to HD-DVD and then the war would have been over.

Oh well
*hides in bomb shelter*

So, what actually happens now? HD-DVD will just be banned or something? Or is it just an indicator that Blu-Ray is the supposed winnar and therefore superior?

I suspect HDDVD will slowly die while Blu-ray continues to get a bigger share of the pie untill it's eaten the whole thing.

Unless something changes HD-DVD will continue to lose market share until they say, "Oh crap we aren't making enough money D:" and switch to Blu-Ray.

With a larger market share and more studio backing than HD-DVD Blu-Ray pretty much is the winner. If there was a compelling selection of content out there for it I'd buy a Blu-Ray drive tomorrow. But it doesn't necessarily follow that Blu-Ray is a superior format, having never tried Blu-Ray or HD-DVD I can't comment except to say that I like Blu-Ray better on paper.
