Who has recently been accepted to University/college?

Congrats, Stig. I know how ****ing demoralising it can be to keep hacking away at education even after it seems like you've no chance of getting anywhere. In that situation I imagine a lot of people give up. You didn't. I really hope it goes well for you :D

Thanks Sulkdude :D I'm feeling pretty good about how all this is going to go down. Everything has fallen into place; I'll be taking interesting courses, living in a new town, and living with my best friend and his friends. This is one guy who will never give up against The Man and his bureaucratic plots.

Giving up is great though... then you can do other things. Going through life being successful at easy things is totally satisfying. That's why hookers were invented.

Deathbro: Yeah I'm 22 and just getting into university, so what, wanna fight about it? :p Truth is, I've been struggling with depression and anxiety for the past four years. Highschool marks weren't great, didn't get into uni; applied and got into college, dropped out due to depression; applied to a different program, got in, dropped out again due to depression; moved out with friends, got fired, got more depressed, got a new job, got more depressed, ended my lease early, got more depressed, got fired, got more depressed. And now I'm going to uni THAT IS THE IMPORTANT THING THAT I WILL FOCUS ON :D

Until you get depressed, get kicked out/leave, and then get more depressed.

Goddamn Queens.

Haha, Queens :p

Its a great school with a beautiful campus and good professors. However, if you have some aversion to preppy rich white kids then this is probably not the best university to go to. Thats my biggest problem so far, student body makes me rage sometimes.

Also flamingdts, McGill was my first choice but I didnt get accepted (Ontario literally gets looked at last out of the WHOLE WORLD, I'm not even exagerating). A few of my friends go there and are really liking it so far. Be prepared to work your ass off should you get accepted there though. I plan to reapply there for grad school, or maybe in the later years of undergrad.

Anyways, should be focussing on the great news at hand. Congrats on getting accepted Stigmata! (hint: go for biology)

I'm leaning towards bio, actually, though I'd love to do a double-major between any two of my options. I'd like to know, why do you think bio is the better choice?

Until you get depressed, get kicked out/leave, and then get more depressed.
You make me sad sometimes :(

Well, quite a bit of it is bias, as I am in Life Sciences (essentially Biology with a focus on people). I just find the subject extremely interesting, and I like the thought of being able to do research for a living (hopefully, unless you work in a hospital research isnt the most stable job).

I used to really want to do something in computing, but I realized I can essentially do everything I'd ever want to do in computer (to some extent, I still wouldnt mind taking a course here or there) as a hobby, whereas I couldnt do that for Biology.

Anyone who graduates instantly misses the lifestyle.

Maybe...but I'm tired of paying out my ass and getting into debt to have all this stress.

I want to be paid to have stress, dammit.

Got accepted to:

University of Virginia
College of William and Mary
Virginia Polytechnic Institute ("Virginia Tech")

Got rejected from:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology ("MIT")
Columbia University

^Congrats. My cousin teaches at Virginia Tech (although I won't give names for obvious reasons).

I've heard from at least 2 profs that MIT is a miserable, excessively hyper-competitive school, so maybe it's good you're not going there. I never even applied :)

Well, you cant really go to Uni without getting debt which gets taken from your salary before it even enters your bank account each month, and the rates vary with your salary which is a nice touch I guess.

Anyway, my biggest issue with Uni isnt the debt or the stress, but the companies in the world.

They want to pay low salaries and get people with x degrees in x discipline with x amount of experience.

Problem is, the only way they are going to get those people is by hiring graduates. Graduates get paid low salaries and have the required degrees (usually). But they dont want graduates as they have no experience.

How the ***k are graduates supposed to get experience when they've just spent the last decade or 2 of their life in school, 3-4 of which were at Uni, and now you want them to have 5 years experience with a degree that can only be obtained by going to a specialist Uni?

And graduates cant GET the required experience because nobody will take them on as they have no experience in the first place. Its a vicious, pointless cycle. Stop worrying about your profit margins that month/year and worry about the future of your company, which lies in the newly and so-called 'unexperienced' graduates.

Wake up business world. Your future is knocking yet you wont open the ***king door!

That's very true...I've run into that problem. Luckily I've got some internship experience so I'm not completely screwed, but I've definitely been looked over because of my "lack of experience."

They'll wake up eventually I hope. I didn't spend 4 years and get myself $20,000 in debt to not be be able to get a job in the engineering field.

I've constantly worried about that happening. So I'm trying to find work in my field now to build up such experience.

Do none of you do internships during the holidays or something? That's the primary method of getting 'experience' during university. See also helping running to run university societies, newspapers, charities, etc. I mean, I didn't do this stuff because I'm lazy, but hey.

Just mailed off my intent to enroll for Stetson University today. Will enter as a Junior! :E
