Who here wants a fix to the stuttering?

Not me. I don't have a stuttering problem in HL2. The only time I did was after the first "patch" was released. Then another one came out and it was all gone.

Buying more RAM fixed the stuttering for me.

Never got one, but didnt it say in the update they tried, twice

Didn't they release a patch 3 days before christmas that fixed it?

I used to get it a lot but after the patches, its pretty much nonexistant.

Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source Update Released
December 22, 2004, 3:37 pm · Alfred Reynolds

Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source updates are available and will be applied automatically when Steam is restarted. The changes include:

Half-Life 2

Fixed sound stuttering problems caused by thread contention in sound system

Counter-Strike: Source

Fixed missing models when running the Video Stress Test

After this, I had no stuttering issues. my pc plays any other game on the highest detail settings, and only HL2 had problems. But now that the patch mentioned in my quote here was released, the game is almost flawless. I have had 3 cases of getting stuck in the AI characters in the "Follow Freeman" chapter.

The stuttering problem became obvious when the differences between STEAM users with hardware audio had higher STEAM memory usage than those using software sound.

Even after the last patch I still have some stuttering, but only in Follow Freeman or right after the "Loading."

I keep hearing from some people that they continue to encounter excessive stuttering. Maybe Valve should work to fix that. Or just ignore them like they've done before.

Yeah, given Valve's reputation for lousy support of their games, their refusal to ever fix problems or release patches. Tell me - which issues do you think Valve have "ignored"?

Are you sure your own system can handle the settings it uses? I used to use high detail and it suttered all the time. I put it down to medium and it dissapeared entirely. I think the problem Valve fixed is the stuttering that happened regardless of settings or system, which seems to be fixed.

I never had the stuttering problem until valve released their "Stutter bug fix" patch. Now my game stutters roughly every 30 seconds for about 3 to 5 seconds.

Yes valve please do something :x

I have alots of stutter. That could be just because of my computer, though. Lately, the amount of stutter seems to be increasing along with the loading times and that pisses me off.

Ghost - this is an issue that will never be resolved with the amount of ignorance and denial associated with it. You won't find much help on these forums or with the Valve team.

Although apparently many have had no problems, not one person I know personally has managed to resolve the stutter since the game's release, including myself, and since Valve released patches that worked for some people the problem is now conveniently non-existant and residing under a carpet somewhere.

I suggest giving up on bad rubbish and moving on to better things, this year is looking to bring some great games. As a bonus you won't need steam to cock them up either. :E

happy new year

my stuttering has gone but i still have a problem at the start of eli's lab where mossman doesn;t enter the lift

I think it's time Valve spoke out about this.

How can you just assume that they are not currently working to fix this?

Of course they know of this problem. Settle down. They will get it fixed.

Blah blah blah anti-Valve rhetoric blah blah blah.

Have Valve said they're no longer working on the problem? No.

Have Valve released a patch that fixes the problem for a large number of users? Yes.

Does that mean that they've finished? No.

I still have the stuttering after the patches. But that just means Valve hasn't gotten round to me yet :) Besides, I insist upon playing with max texture quality :D 512MB doesn't really cut it anymore.

For all those people denouncing Valve for not fixing their problems, I suggest you count the number of updates Source has had since it's release, and then take a look around at other developers' patch timescales.

Yes, actually, it does.

My PC has 512mb. But I also have an ATI Radeon 9800 256mb Video Card.

With this card, the game runs absolutely smoothly. The only "stuttering" I get is online, and that's Lag, which is completely different.

I just switched from 512MB to a gig. The difference it makes is amazing. :p

He's right, though. 512MB really isn't enough for high-end games anymore.

What, exactly, did you notice that was different?

I don't think I'd see any benefit if I upgraded, since the game already runs smooth enough.

The stuttering has gone away for me since the patches that were released. Have you resubmitted a bug report to Valve? Make sure they know that you are still having the issues?

And of course, try all the usual, make sure you have no unneccessary services running. (even close the "Play Games" window). The sound quality to medium and leaving your settings to what valve defaults them too helps a lot too.

If you have stuttering, your settings are too high.

I upgraded from 512mb to 1024mb of RAM a few days before the supposed 'fix' for the stuttering came out, the stuttering disappeared and load times are about 1/3 of what they used to be. Some levels would take more than 3 minutes to load with half a gig of RAM, with a full gig they take about a minute or less.

I really hope they hurry up with the damn fix, i actually thought i read sum where that the recent patch was supposed to fix it, but nah..my Hl2 stutters more than ever now.

Already said I had oversize textures for my setup.

If you want to run new games at high texture resolutions, 512MB isn't ideal.

my game stutters generally after a "loading" sequence. Once in a while it'll happen twice then be gone.

But, recently, the game will simply stop right in the middle of play and freeze! Not sure why. It was working fine until Ravenhol (sp?). Now I don't even want to fire up the game because I know at any moment it'll happen and I'll have to reboot. Ughhh....

Does anyone who runs on the recommended settings get stuttering?

I hear alot of "well I overclocked my p3 and my 9600 so I should be able to run everything on high, my best friend has the exact same computer as me and runs everything on high at 90fps"

Yeah, I still get stutter on CS:Source most of the time on the outdoor-based maps..For example on office, I don't get that much sound stutter. On dust, dust 2, and in the vents of prodigy I have problems with sound..

I tried re-installing CS:Source, tried some tips found lying around here and there, and at the STEAM forums. I tried toning down my graphics, but I turned it down to 800x600, no aa, biliniear filtering, low shadows, and the sound was still present, but not as bad. I just got my video card on Christmas, and what sucks is, if I have to turn down my graphics so bad that I have no 'eye-candy' to look at in order to hear properly, then having a new video card is not worth it...

I've been advised to get a new sound card, but the next step up is an Audigy sound card I think, but it includes 5.1 surround sound, and I never use surround sound...I use headphones...

My sound card is a Soundblaster Live..the Audigy has the same bit amount as my current sound card...

I still don't understand why I have sound stutters...

blah blah blah predictable defensive rhetoric blah blah blah.

Did I already acknowledged that the patches have fixed a lot of stutters? yes.

Does that mean they have finished? who the **** knows? do you? no.

Which is exactly my point. Thankyou.

Since the pre-Christmas patch I've actually had to stop playing Half Life 2 because the stuttering (which rarely affected me at all) was so bad.

There's a command to get rid of it, but it's a bit of a bind having to reverse an alleged 'fix' as soon as its applied.

The fix is something on the lines of noforcemattextures...blah 0 or something.

I noticed a high processor load whenever it loaded up diffrent soundscapes... but the last patch from steam fixed all my problems
