Me? I think it was the g-man as a pre-emtive strike on Xen (which would also allow him to capture it)

Gman. He used the events of Black Mesa to shape Gordon into this tool as such, and as Walker said - HL2 was his deployment of that tool. He used the whole event to transform Gordon.

Of course, it was Breens idea to carry out the test - Gman was simply using it to his utmost advantage. He saw the chance, and he took it. The rift didn't occur due to Gmans influence though, it was just something he knew was going to happen.

Decay said that the administrator ordered the anti-mass spectrometer to be put beyond safe levels so I say Breen (whether intentional or not).

GMan has the obvious control. I thought it was dead obvious during the Adrian Shepard (forgot the expansion pack name), and of course, at the end of HL.

GMan isn't god, but he has enough power to cause this kind of damage.

Although they never came in contact with each other - Breen and G-Man still used the RC for power. One to control the world the other to control the man that would break the world.

But it is strange to ask if G-Man knew about the Combine's intervention after the RC's aftermath...

I remember a thread posted a loooooong time ago where the Halflife2.net team attempted to decipher the G-man's muffled conversation in the beginning. Eventually the consensus was this.

Scientists: "I've told you a hundred times how I'm opposed to pushing this equipment beyond the test levels-"

G-man: "This is not your decision to make."
G-man: "You must not get in the way."
G-man: "If only I could just...(?)
G-man: "My employers don't agree."
G-man: (?)

I say G-man.

What about
"I will not let the sequence commence?"

I have heard about that before but I don't think it was put in context of the conversation.

The scientists' line is fairly easy to understand so their is little chance that it is wrong, and unless the G-man yelled at him for five minutes saying, "THATS GREAT MAN, LETS DO IT!!!!", then the line was translated incorrectly or taken out of context.

Not that I'm saying this website's interpretation is 100% correct, but the whole dialogue was interpreted, while I think the person that came up with that quote didn't listen to the whole conversation.

Multi choice?
I think Breen and the Gman were in on it together
Then again I think that
- The Gman's employers were the combine
- That while the Nihilanth's people (controllers and vortigaunt) were not combine, they were once and rebelled, that the Combine were waging war on Xen, that Breen made contact with the Combine there not the Nihilanth, that the Gman on behalf of the Combine negotiated with Breen resulting in the planned resonance cascade which essentially crippled the Nihilanth.
:p
I <3 these threads

So why did the G-man have Gordon blow up the citadel?
The combine cut the G-man's dental plan and he has a really shitty union so this was all he could do to get out of his contract.

yeah unemployment is a bummer - all he could afford was a new tie :(

:p

I say accident. Yes Gman used the events and yes Breen pushed it beyond safe limits. But i don't think the RC was preplaned.

Eli, I thought that was obvious....

Well seriously, a part of me thinks it is Breen who engineered it. Gman just took advantage of the situation. Gman is more passive-aggressive it seems. I dunno, maybe Breen and Gman worked together, only Gman didn't keep up his end of the bargain.

I dont think Breen knew of Gman at the time. Or maybe he did. Hell i want real answers now!

I like to think that it was an accident, although Im pretty sure that theres some suspicious circumstances surrounding it.

Breen did say "Didn't you realise your contract was open to the highest bidder" or something along those lines.. and G-man did talk at the End of Half-life about a Contract... Maybe the Combine Advisor knows about the Gman, or his employers? or rather ex-employers since I do presume Gman has somehow severed contact with his employers or vice versa. I can only just speculate.. Hopefully Episode one will cover all the annoying questions that had bugged us for near a decade.

I don't believe it was an accident, there were just too many events that seemed prepared in advance. I believe it was g-man who set the stage for Breen to unwittingly cause the resonance cascade. G-man used the events that followed to his own ends, attempting to weaken xen and then us. And in the confusion of things he ended up securing an agent out of it.

However before g-mans plans for the RC could fully pan out the RC attracted the combines attention and the 7-hours war commenced.

Yes well i dont think Breen knew of Gman at the time of the RC. If Breen know about him at the end of Half life2 isn't sure either. Just becouse he mention the contract.

Breen, maybe with Combine, but G-man was involved too...
Maybe G-man wanted war with forces on Xen and occupaion of borederworld and because this he don't stoppe the experiment. But he doesn't expect Combine attack on Earth....
Or only Gordon is responsible for this mess...

Just theories....I hope we will see about that...soon...

I vote Breen.

Decay pretty much confirmed that the cascade was no accident and I find it highly suspicious that he just happened to become the ruler of Earth as a consequence.

That doesn't mean the G-Man was not involved in causing it as well though. There is simply no way of knowing either way right now.

you would have convinced me only it isnt a public poll

I think that Breen & GMan had some sort of deal worked out, maybe for both end to benifit somehow, and Breen didn't uphold his part in it and took over the whole thing, just before the Resonance Cascade. That would explain his pleading with the scientists, and his having the Lambda on his breifcase in HL1 but not in HL2, and GMan wanted to get back at him, so GMan took Xen and made the Citadel go poopies in an attempt to stop Breen from taking over the whole thing, instead of the half that they agreed upon.

It was Dr breen, I see no reason for the Gman to have done it. He is working against the combine so he wouldnt do something so key in their invasion of Earth. The half life saga site says that Breen was tempted by the combine to create the cascade because it was humanity's only chance at intergalactic travel. He then purposely set up the cascade which the Gman could not stop(resulting in the invasion from the HECU soldiers in an attempt to stop it from going too far). After Earth had taken over Xen the combine were now able to portal into it because Nihilanth and whatever else it was that was stopping tunneling to Xen were dead.
