halflife2 hands down i predict 700 million within its first year and the following years people will keep on buying

Theres no way Half Life 2 will make more money. There are more XBOXes than there are PCs powerful enough to run it.

Halo 2 for sure. I was going to just say your mom... but this way is best.

Half-Life 2, Steam packages plus retail and ce and Half-Life 2 will sell for years and HL2 is just a better game, hands down.

both games are making money. who makes the most? erm, cant say.

the amount of money going into Halo 2s gigantic promotions will take away from its net profit if you look it from the point that the advertising is part of the profits - which is isnt really...

if you mean who will make more money then id say Valve - the steam sales they get basically all of the money right? =/ MS owns Bungie so they'll be getting a nice cut aswell but probaly as nice.

oO.

Hmm... difficult question.

Valve has spent a lot more time than Bungie on Half Life 2, but they've also been getting income from Half-Life and Co.

Halo 2 is the XBox killer app.

Bungie is owned by MS, so the difference between income on retail versus direct sales is pretty unimportant.

The Halo 2 XBL servers do require maintenance, however the Steam servers are probablly even more expensive to maintain.

Considering those complexities, I think you'd have to only consider retail units sold.

In that case... hmmm... I'd say that Halo 2 does better than HL2 for the Holiday Season by far, but Half Life 2 ends up winning in the long run, considering how long Half Life ended up staying relevant.

However, here's the thing: I think for this round, Halo 2 has much more solid Multiplay action than HL2. CS:S is fun and all, but it's not Halo 2 fun (Team Swordball! WOOT!)

well isnt it obvious? the g man will make the most money. lol kidding. Halo 2 will indeed make more money only because it gets out to more people and stuff and is more well known.

i was going to say Halo2, dur...

but then i remembered that Half-Life 1 still sells well and that Valve will keep updating HL2 and adding stuff while maintaining or lowering the price., also making HL2 a pre-requisite for later mods and expansions etc etc etc.

hard to say, long term.

Exactly. Half-Life 2 hands down, because of mods.

Halo 2 will sell more initially, but Half-Life 2 will endure.

Even a massive ad campaign shouldn't cost anymore than 15 to 20 million for a big game. Half-Life 2's development costs are around $40 million, without promotions. ;)

As for who will come out on top? Well...Half-Life isn't exactly a weakling, the original sold almost 9 million copies to date, Halo only sold 5 million. Then again there is a time difference between the two so HL should obviously be higher.

For unit sales I think Half-Life 2 may have a chance at coming out on top...in the long run. For actual money made, I think Half-Life 2 will come out on top also since its street price will be $55, where Halo 2 is $49.

Every 8 boxes Half-Life 2 sells will basically equal 9 Halo 2 boxes sold.

Now that's only if HL2 and H2 keep neck and neck in sales.

Half-Life 2.

Steam Sales are just as expensive, but yet make so much money for Valve.

They cut the middle man.

a better question would be: "who will make more money Bungie or Valve?" this way your not counting how much the publishers get.

i think valve has the advantage with steam even though halo2 may sell more copies.

HUGE advantage...

Valve makes nearly four times as much with Steam sales vs. Retail, if I remember correctly.

Half-Life 2, but this is biased as it's a Half-Life 2 forum...

I'm not being biased really...I'm thinking of the fact that HL2 will sell nearly as many copies as Halo 2 eventually, and HL2 has steam..a huge revenue bringer-inner.

Within the first 3-4 months of sales. Halo 2 will make more of a profit.

Within the next 6-12 months. Half-Life 2 will make more of a profit, depending on how things go 11.16.04

If word get's out that Preloading/Validation process was a sucess.
I.E. Steam is prepared for the massive amount of validations and user loads on 11.16.04

Simply look at the original Half-Life. More and more mods have been developed over the years. Game never got boring. I believe the same will happen with Half-Life 2.

This is incredibly frustrating. The console market is so much bigger than the pc game market, it hurts. Everyone that says Half-Life 2 will make more is a fanboy.

FLAME ON

Console games die. PC games get mods, and live forever (see hl1, still selling today, what console games came out in 1998? meh... oh, the DREAMCAST came out in 1998.. AHAHAA)

Halo 2, sorry. Halo 2 has solid multiplayer IMO and thats whats gonna keep the sales up for a long while to come. Plus the 2.3 million units sold in the first day of Halo 2 gives it such a huge leap forward that Half-Life 2 needs incredible numbers to keep up.

And in all seriousness, not that many people have powerful PCs, certainly not as many as Xbox owners. Yeah I know, mods will make Half-Life 2 (sales) shine but don't forget Halo 2 now has multiplayer plus (most probably) lots of new content from Bungie.

Argue all you like about which is the better game and which really deserves what amount of money but realistically, I see Halo 2 getting more money. On another note though: who cares? There both gonna be well off.

I believe Half-Life 2 will sell better, provided it has the longevity of the original. I mean, I still see the original Half-Life on store shelves, even after 6 years...

Are we taking into account the fact that HL2 will evenetually make it's way to the xbox? If that happens, then my guess is it will outsell H2 sooner. If it doesn't make it to xbox (or takes ages) then it will be a lot closer (over a year+) though.

H2 will easily win the immediate sales.

I hate to say it, but Halo 2. Mainly due to the fact that many people prefer console games over PC because you can play console games as they were meant to be played for a lot cheaper than having a good PC.
