BWT, those who have seen Band of Brothers, what do you think about it? Is it historicly correct?

considering all the people that died.....i wouldnt say anyone was a winner....

I believe Band of Brothers was correct, they actually used stories from the vets who were in Easy Company. If you havn't seen it you're missing out. There is suppose to be another series about the war in the pacific I believe.

You just can't say a certain country won this war. If it wasn't for all of the joining together and working as a team the war would have been lost. If the British, American, and Canadian forces hadn't joined in it would have been lost for sure. Oh yea, and the Russians did a good job on the eastern front also.

i dont think any 1 country won it. The reason USA says they won it is because they joined in after 2 years of it starting, so they were fresh when they got there. I dont see CANADA on that poll! Its insulting! We kicked ass in WWII u know, germans tried avoiding trenches where canadians were stationed because canada was a lot harder to get out.

I thought I'd say Americans, just because it's actually not true.
The Allies, of course!

Ummm... maybe we say we won because we were on the allies side... which sort of... you know... won? Duh?

The USA contributed more money and material than any other country...the russians lost the most lives.....britain fought the axis on there doorstep...as did russia..... france was conquered early in the war, enduring a terrible occupation....canada fought like country 10x there size.... as did many other countries.....

no one won the war. everyone paid to high a price on the allied side to call any single country "the winner"

if there ever can be an ideal war, that was it. a truly evil enemy(nazi's not germany) and an allied force comprised of morally great(communism is good in theory[although stalin was a bad man with a good country]) countries. of course there is no such thing as an ideal war expect for the absence of it.

I actually put the Americans. Not because I'm being silly, but because the United States became a very serious super-power afterwards. Most people don't realize that the US didn't have the kind of influence they have now in Europe and Asia until after WWII. WWII ushered in an era of industrial and technological dominance by the US that only very recently has globalisation chipped away at. Yeah, the US won.

--Mr. Bildo

Thene inthis case would say they won from it, but not the war.

I would like to say that while I agree it was very much a team effort, if the Americans had stayed completely out of it, imagine how much less supplies all the other countries would have had, not to mention the lack of our military. It would have been a much harder, much more costly war for all sides involved. Damn all the Brits that won't admit America has done any good! You know who you are :P

Well said...

But if you had to pick one in the classic understanding, Id have to say all of above, although I did vote allies cuz they "cleaned" the most space. Oh and had nicer oeaders ;o)

Heil Fuhrer!!!!!
Wo ist Deutschland in dieser Abstimmung ?
Sie gewannen! Die Arier gewannen! Die reinen Leute

j/k

WW2 shouldn't be subject for a poll. It is too important for stupid young ppl to bash in stupid forums.

As crabcakes said, 50 million lives weren't lost for us to talk like this.
And Germany was this close to win. If the Fuhrer hadn't ordered the invasion of Russia....
And after that, if he had listened to Rommel, A.K.A. «Desert Fox» in June 1944 then Op. Overlord would hv failed.

Anyway, his dream was not evil, it was just against gen. common sense if you know what I mean.

edit - now that I read my post, it looks like I'm a Nazi. But I'm not, I'm against any sort of support to Arian ideas and their consequences.

I'm watching through Band of Brothers right now, and its excellent.
So far absolutely nothing has made me think its inaccurate, it seems spot on. (Except for that one part where Jimmy Fallon shows up...thats just strange.)

Ehehe I voted Russia until I saw the option 'Allies'
But Russia had imho the largest impact on the war. If Russia hadn't weakened Germanies largest armies on the eastern front, the Germans could have stopped the other allies like the US, Britain and Canada in the west with those armies, or atleast lasted years longer.

Russia was on the Axis side until Hitler became an asshole and attacked them.
He had pure hatred for the East Arians.

if you want to define 'winning a war' as being the first to reach the capital of the war mongering nation, then the russians won the war for the allies. but each of the allies won their own little wars/battles, so i don't think you can crown any one nation as being responsible for winning the war. and no, the US did NOT win the war in any way shape or form thank you very much.

so yeah, the russians get my vote.

Well, I agree with Sprafa. WW2 is too tragic and awful to be talked about like this.

But one's gotta admire the British for fighting of the Axis that were pretty much hanging out in their front yard. Yay for ol'blighty! *Fuseds patriotic feelings kick in*

EDIT: Spelt Sprafa wrong :o :P

Yeah cananda's tank sure did but up a fight!

i guess it's like comparing this to a team victory. your team won, everyone did their part extremely well, but who scored the winning goal? essentially it doesn't really matter as it was a team game, but the winning goalscorer obviously gets recognition.

Russia I say. They overwhelmed the Germans with their huge armies.

I just started reading Berlin 1945 (Great book so far, Antony Beevor have written it), and there he said that the Russians had 6,7 million soldiers that reached from the Baltic Sea to Adriatic Sea (not sure what the name of that sea is on English, but in Swedish it's named "Adriatiska Havet (Sea)"). Although I believe that all of them weren’t soldiers. Many must have been women and children.
And like a German Sergeant said in January 1945, "We are doomed, but we will fight to the last man".

Stalin wanted Berlin, which was his goal. And if the Americans or the rest would invade Berlin first, he would order his army to attack the American army, British Army etc.

War sure is insane in my opinion. :(

I guess, seeing as they retreated to Moscow, and waited for the Germans to starve, freeze, and suffer massive casualties under the harsh, Russian weather...yeah, they really overwhelmed the enemy with back-breaking invasions and assaults. :|
Not to say their strategy didn't work, it obviously did, it just wasn't overwhelming.
In fact, the Germans were hunting them into their own country, until the cruel winter took over. It's the same thing they did with Napoleon, the EXACT same thing.
It's not the bravest strategy, but it's one that works when you have nothing else to do.

Not the exact same thing, but very similar indeed. They burned their cities (Moscow) for Napoleon.
Russians are smart bastards.

russians probally contributed the most although like sprafa said: it was so closeand theres no point in talking about it now as it was a pointless war that happened 50 years ago....

well, u could argue about wheteher "pointless" is the right word, it all depends on your point of view.....
u can discuss that if u want but im not encoraging anything. im not in that mood today. maybe ill encorage something tommorow.
*edit* hmmm... more posts. yes.. ***ssians....

Yeah, they did burn the cities, but the winter took very good care of Napoleon's troops. I forgot that one little part, it's ALMOST the exact same thing. :D

I don't recal the USA ever claiming that it won the war and yes Canada did play a role in WWII but it wasn't all that significant (although you guys did have your own beach at Normandy, which has to be saying something). Nothing I have ever read implies that the US won the war, at least in Europe (considering that we did fight in Japan virtually single handedly). Oh and Band of Brothers doesn't depict any particular nation winning the war but merely the lives of you average grunt during the conflict (told through a US perspective because that is how Steven Ambrose wrote the book).

well, actually, I'd say ol' BJ won the war for everyone, what with his owning robo hitler and all.

I'd say whoever one the war it certainly wasn't the Russian peasants who had their land burned and generally got killed by everyone. In Soviet Russia, World War II wins you.
