actually, if you turn up your brightness (or edit pics in PS)
you see some ugly artifacts..

Very original.

are these shadows a user specific bug or are they supposed to be crappy like that

Can you turn your monitor on first? kthx. My eyes are bleeding.

I can't see anything in the pictures, so I won't comment.

Anyway, the shadows aren't a strong point of Source. If you want to stare at shadows, play Doom 3.

i personally have no problem with any part of the source engine ...

I don't see anything wrong...

platinum: you live in oklahoma also? OMFG!

Theres this one thing that I get, where your just about 20 ft from the light, and my gun get a cheetah-like artifact thingie

Are you insane? The screenshots are too dark to see anything.

Woah... people actually care about the shadows?

Only the ones who stay locked up in their house playing computer all day... Oh wait that's all of them

Whats big deal with shadows...Its just a copy of a object with no depth in it. Big deal...Really they can enchance the mood but ya know...When you shooting the shit out of a strider or 100 zombies are trying to cuddle with you...You wont stop and cry about the shadow...I mean i wouldn't.

Just to clarify this.
--You may see HL2 shadows to fall threw objects.
--Other games draw there shadows almost exactly like HL2. Guild Wars, Hitman 2 etc.. Why don't you notice it in these? Because there are barley any entities compared to in Hl2. In HL2 really any physical object is an entity and therefor shadows arn't drawn on them.

Or something like that..

What is the problem with those shadows? They aren't as good as Doom 3, but HL2 cannot be better in every way than every other game out there, Valve had to pick and choose what to focus on.

Valve picked this way because that it's the cheapest possibly way to do (soft) shadows. It's the best you can do when you want to give a lot of entities a (soft) shadow. Rome: TW uses the same system.

some of the shadow work is absolutely awesome, the fact that shadows can stack accurately to create darker spots is amazing, I have never seen anything close to it in a game before.
