OK i might get seriously flamed here but,

I didnt even think Gabe was a programmer ? I thought he was just a manager like role. Sso why did he have the entire source engine on his computer and allow online access to it?

manager as he may be, he still needs knowledge of programming. most of the managers were programmers at one point in time

Gabe is a manager and a programmer. He wrote code for Microsoft's OS/2. It's understandable that he'd contribute to the coding process of Half-Life 2.

As to the quoted statement, it's not like Gabe chose to make it available...someone got it through his e-mail account connection...it's not as if Gabe had the Source engine in a neat little one file package sitting on his desktop. Whoever got it from his comp knew some serious shit in order to get it for themselves.

IMHO they really asked for it. Having such sensible code on a machine directed to the Internet is highly unprofessional :(

Doesn't inspire much confidence in the security of HL2's MP component. :(

:( so sad, now what can these guys do with the source code anyways? can they use it t cheat in mp ?? lol and valve has many other copies of this source code right? and some of the e-mails that are in our valve info thread could be false i guess :\

yeah it would've been more logical if the PC that had the complete HL2 source on it wouldn't have been connected to the internet.

To the topic starter: You don't know what a CVS repository is, do you?

It's not the first time something major has been hooked up to the internet. For example NASA hooking up shuttle controls to the net.
I'm sorry but having such a mass of data plugged into the net was stupid in the first place. I'm sure Gabe will have two comp's now. "Gabe's Development PC" "Gabe's Internet PC"
There goes my theory that mokies sit replying to Gabe's mail.

They should have had 0 net connection for any of the computers that had the source code on them, and if they needed to be able to "share" they shoulda just used a in house lan.

Who ever did this made a great hack and did the wrong thing afterwards ... don't blame gabe he shouldn't have to deal with this bull shit. Its just sad that someone did this. I thought it was fake then i read the code and realized it was very real. Man what a blow to Gabe.

Its quite common in the office to have every computer hooked up to the internet.

I personally have to monitor my brothers access to the internet and do this using a SpyAgent software which although rudimentry does the job neatly.

Simple fact is whats done is done its not a huge blow to Valve the will recover and i doubt it will be a serious dent to the games shelf due date.
