I never got it. Is it supposed to mean you are cool? hax0r, pen0r, vagin0r, 1337, pwned. I hate them all.

i never understood either, but i think they're funny sometimes

Welcome to the internet and 10 years ago.

Enjoy your stay.

If I think what you mean by 'hacker' you mean a 13 year old dipshit, then that answers itself.

My idea of a hacker is a network techie, or security consultant/specialist.

Hackers just to type in l33t to get arround search engines that were used to try and track what they were talking about online.

Clever really...

Actually I think it originated with 31337 which was a hacker port for win 95.

Wikipedia said:
# 31337/tcp: Back Orifice - remote administration tool (often Trojan horse) ("31337" is the "Leet speak" version of "Elite")

Is that what you mean?

Hackers I know type correctly, its the wanna-be hackers that type all "leet."

Don't bring the proper definition of hacker down to the crappy levels of "1337".

31337 was the port to some hacker BBS back in the early days of the internet, or something

This has nothing to do with the thread, I just want to say... you suck.

Hacker was originally a term for one who specialized in security, wasn't it? I think one who disrupts and attacks networks is a "cracker", however racist that might sound.

That's correct. I remember adding numbers to filenames on ancient mainframes to prevent them from bein accidentally duplicated/overwritten, and it's the same idea with searches and hacker-leet.

Yes, that is correct.

A hacker comes across a problem and creates a solution
A cracker comes across a problem and downloads a solution

Quoted for the most truth I've ever seen...besides when Sinkoman said I was hot...but he was intoxicated, so I didn't quote him.

133+'5 j|_|57 4n07h3r |_4|\|9|_|493, j35t li|<3 .jp 0r 50m37|-|i|\|9.

Actually it's a pain in the butt to write. You're better off combining it with proper english to make yourself seem 'cool'.

I think it's awesome as another language, but unfortunantly spoken it's just mangled english.
