Why do I get 1000 ping?

Hey, I got 56k and I am getting 1000 ping on Source. I think it may be a steam problem, as I saw people with 56k playing, and they had about 180 ping.
Anyone got any suggestions?

You probably have a firewall turned on. Turn it off and try playing then. If you get a normal ping you have to set your firewall to keep certain ports open, but I'm not into this topic, so I hope someone else helps you then. At least you will know where's the problem. :]

I didnt even do anything and now it works. I get around 180 ping now.

56k? Thats brutal! I suggest you think about getting cable or any other form of hi speed internet.
