Why does steam have to keep validating hl2?

Every 2 days or so before i can play hl2 steam has to "verify game files"... what does this mean? Any why does it have to do it more than once?

I don't know.. but I get the exact same problem. it's really freakin annoying, because it takes up to 20 minutes sometimes. =/

I'm thinking about completely redownloading HL2...

Yes I get the same problem also and I'm getting sick of having to constantly verify my game despite the fact I've done it 3 times now.

Nope, that's a lie. Just defragged and I'm stuck validating my game for the 4th time now that the patch was just released.

Are you verifying everytime you open Steam? or just every time there is an update?

I re-verify when there is an update. Which makes perfect sense to me.

Mine keeps doing it too. It's obviously a bug. Everyone fill out a form on steampowered.com and maybe we can get this fixed. Annoying that a feature that was supposed to help people with broken files has now backfired and is annoying people. Maybe the naysayers were right about Steam...
