Why does the sky suck?

If you want a dynamic sky go play Flight Simulator 2004.

Or any other FPS made in the last five years?

Indeed.

Really?

Doom 3? Nope.

Unreal Tournament 2004? Nope.

Unreal Tournament 2003? Nope

Unreal 2? Nope

Call of Duty? Nope

Medal of Honor? Nope

See a pattern emerging here?

*scrolling clouds aren't a dynamic sky - they're just an animated texture in the skybox. HL2 is entirely capable of this (see de_tides).

Um, not really. He's just plain wrong about Call of Duty and Doom 3. I haven't played the Unreal or Medal of Honor games so I don't know about those. And big deal anyway if somebody manages to find a scant handful of games with non-scrolling skies. My guess is they'll still look better than the pixellated mess/borderline joke sky of Half-Life 2.

Pretty bizarre how some of you just can't accept this. I guess it can only be attributed to fanboyism. ::shrugs::

It's Pi Mu Rhowned actually ;)

I looked up at the skies abit ingame, i thought they were gorgeous. it took me a whole while to figure out that they wernt moving (i expected them to), but i just went 'meh' and carried on with the great game...

people have been banned for lesser crimes than provoking a moderator :x

Pi Mu Rho didn't exactly need to own him because I think he did it to himself.

By the way, if you want to see an example of great skies in an FPS, look to Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (circa 1998).
I hadn't really noticed that earlier, so I decided to take him up on it.

Here is the game that has more realistic sky than HL2:

As a comparison, here is HL2:

Obviously we are all fanboys, as this is in no way retarded.

lmao, nicely done :E

How 'bout you get your own screenshot from Shogo instead of stealing it from another site? That looks like an unfinished version of the game and in one of the least impressive levels no less. Try the opening city level in the actual retail-released game and clarity will be yours.

And it's pretty sad that you're all excited that HL2 appears to have a better sky than a seven year-old game.

Any news on a sky-fixing patch? Or are we really expected to deal with the overhead monstrosity Valve calls a sky texture?

Man, grow up. You have made no valid point, been proved wrong, denied the ass raping Pi gave you, yet you still continue.
You have 16 posts, several of them from this thread. Do you know what that says to me? You have nothing better to do, so you've decided to spam this place with a useless observation.

I mean, if you are moaning about this then SURELY you are so fantasticlly brilliant you could create your own texture?

No whats sad is that you came back months later to drag this thread up.

Err you brought it up by suggesting a comparison lol

Deal with it, the sky looks fine.

I owned him first! I just err pressed enter a split second slower than you.. and the site time is wrong so err i posted first damnit!! :p

aww, okay, that point goes to you.
I want the next round of smackdown :p

What a brilliant way to start off your stay at HL2.net .......

Yep, he aint gonna last long
(God, if i get banned now i am really gonna look stupid :p)

lol! Look at the fanboys squirm. I love it. "The sky is fine", or the like, has been uttered so many times in this thread... hard proof that fanboyism is alive and well. The sky is so hilariously bad, only a true, dedicated fanboy could say otherwise with a straight face.

So let me ask you, legion of fanboys, how's the AI? "Just fine" as well? Does Half-Life 2 do anything wrong whatsoever? lol. Yeah, I'm the one getting owned. (no, not really. see, that was sarcasm there at the end.)

my god you are still complaining about the damn sky? ITS FINE FFS! and this has nothing to do with fanboyism, shogo looks goddamned ugly next to hl2. As for the 'mere handful' which pi mu rho displayed: where is your 100+ list of FPS games with scrolling skies, which are supposedly so great? There is nothing wrong with a static sky, the hl2 skies are gorgeous. I am not a fanboy. I do not think hl2 is perfect. There are loads of things i would have liked to see improved, like the AI, the lack of friendly fire, the ending etc, hl2 is not a perfect game. But visually it is damn well amazing. I dont see how you can keep complaining about this, even now that HDR is being showcased in DoD: Source. I imagine valve will eventually convert the maps for source games to allow HDR in all games, and that will definately solidify the HL2 skies as being some of the best ever. Oh and if that shogo screenshot above is such a crap one, WHY DONT YOU GET US ONE AND COMPARE IT WITH A HL2 SKY KTHX.

gah i hate it when ppl bring back dead threads

This thread will *never* be dead until Valve does the conscionable thing and releases a sky-fixing patch.

Wow, this is really pathetic and nitpicky. I can't believe that you're actually trying to prove that the sky sucks. WHO ****ING CARES???!!!

It's not like the sky is the main piece in the game. Hell, I still can't believe how nitpicky you're being. It's like complaining that the grass wasn't green enough.

You actually think VALVe, or for that matter, anybody else cares so much about your oppinion to put effort into a patch, to fix something so miniscule as the sky?

Please. Go outside.

Yes, we're all collectively squirming here. Notice how you're the only person to have ever negatively posted here about the skies? Even some of our more well-known anti-HL2 trolls didn't see anything wrong with it.

I name thee troll. Begone.

Personally, I dislike the static skies as well. I mean, Goldeneye had moving skies. On the N64. So add me to your one-person list of people who have ever negatively posted here about the skies. To those of us who look to the skies often in real life, a static sky in a digital world is just another stage of removal. And the point, as I see it, is immersion.

I think that few people would notice as they're busy ramming grenades into combine asses.

I think that the sky moving is only one element of the sky looking good...

I just took a look out the window and.. THE SKY ISN'T MOVING! Well, not FAST enough anyway! GOD NEEDS TO RELEASE A SKY FIXING PATCH!!![/sarcasm]

One thing they COULD do (I'm not asking for them to do, but it could be done later on, but probably won't) is just add a really faded transparent cloud textured sphere over the sky box, and have it rotate... Load up CSS and play the map de_tides. It's nice to have that little extra touch with the sky... But I never once looked at the sky in Hl2 and went "damn, that looks like ass"... But in de_tides I went "hey, it's moving.. cool"... Anyways, HL2 is still the greatest game ever, hands down.

Best sky in a game I think goes to PainKiller. All the skys in that were hardcore.

Please make a better sky then, since you're obviously the grand Pubbah of sky development. Enlighten us all with your powers!

The dudes a little prick. ****ing hell its not like anyone actually goes through the entire game looking at the ****ing sky. Geez I hardly looked at it unless i looked at the citadel but then my attention was on a giant Iron stick soaring into the air. My god this little butt-humper took the time to bug the hell out of us with some gay complain about some miniscule enviromental effect. Your gun is harly pointed up unless attacking a hunter chopper or shooting something off a bridge. Raise your hand if you played then entire game staring at the sky and ****ing complaining about it.

So... any news yet? If VALVe has time for this HDR nonsense surely they can take a day or two, fix the skies, and release a patch for us?

Sit down and shut the **** up.

You're the only one who thinks there's going to be some sort of sky fixing patch.
