Why Gordon will never have the portal gun

Valve has been pretty steadfast with its stance on not seeing Gordon. Doug Lombardi even stressed it in an interview not too long ago. I think it's very unlikely.

But again, why on earth would that stop them from putting such a significant gameplay mechanic as the Portal Gun into their game? If they want it in, they'll work out a way to get it in. Not for the petty reasons that people keep suggesting in this thread.

Portal is very much a sterilised 'safe' environment for using the Portal gun in. That doesn't mean that Half-Life won't either emulate that environment (and since we're going to the Borealis supposedly with its own GlaDOS and material emancipation grids, why on earth wouldn't they emulate that environment?) and it doesn't mean that the 100+ minds behind a number of best selling titles can't think outside of the Portal model better than everyone here can.
There is no chance that Ep3 will require the player to have finished Portal first.
Which is daft, since 90% of people who will want to play it, WILL have played Portal at least to the point that they've got the concepts down.

edit: All said though, I can't see the Portal Gun being in unless it's in its own sterilized section, or if its in only as a Super-Grav-Gun style super-puzzle solving weapon that causes people to fall over and die. Maintaining the mystery of Gordon Freeman will only be a convenient side-effect of not putting the gun in.

another way i see how the portal gun could be used is valve using the physics engine more with a few portals. maybe an older version of the ASHPD cant allow humans to pass through. just because you say one thing doesnt work doesn't mean that it cant be used in another way. you still keep thinking about portal and dont think outside of the box at all.

also crazy killer wtf are you talking about???

the post per day is just an average

how many post ive made divided by the days ive been here

Valve won't assume that, I'm not even sure if they will assume that the player has played Ep2 before Ep3.

I'm willing to admit the possibility of a cameo for portals in Ep3, perhaps on those stationary portal creators but they will either be out of reach, go somewhere trivial (positioned so that you can't see Gordon) or have only one closed portal.

Keep in mind that Ep3 was already being worked on before Portal was released, too early for them to make any kind of grand plans for a Portal Gun in Ep3.

well, whatever happens. I trust valve and I'm sure they'll think up something awesome. They've never failed us before. :)

Hard to make that statement when regardless, Aperture Science was introduced in Episode Two despite the then even more recent creation of Portal. It's also the case that Valve don't have enough faith in where Episode Three is heading to actually show anything of it. This could possibly be because of their reluctance to commit on what Elements of Portal will make the jump to the Borealis. The unproven Portal Gun would be a likely candidate, wouldn't it?

It's not petty. The immersion into the role of Gordon Freeman has been an extremely important mainstay in the HL series. When Valve makes an active effort in all their games to make him a mute, unseen protagonist (and does this for explicitly mentioned reasons), then you can safely bet it's important.

Unless that's all too petty for you.

One question: Why? Why do I need emancipation grids and insane AIs in my Half-Life experience? What purpose does this serve? Because Portal gameplay is teh awesomez? I've already explained why I do not want a puzzle game mixed with my FPS. And I've also explained why I think that shoehorning a Portal-like environment into Half-Life would result in a subpar experience.

Look, there will be more Portal content in the future. Wait for it.

What LandStander said.

Portals without the ability to go through them? Again, subpar. The ASHPD works best in a game that is specifically tailored to it.

Maybe we'll get the original design that shoots shower curtains....

an extenson to my n00b idea:

*crap alert*
you fall down a hole in the borealis and you find the portal gun and use it to make yor way back to alyx and as you come out a fizzler takes it away.

what are you talking about? theres alot of post in here so i dont remember what i said.

also why does it have to be that the portal gun can only be used in the game it was built around?

jesus, you keep putting down that nothing will work and then you cant think of anything yourself. im glad your not one of the designers for ep3 or the game would be crap.

He stated the portal wouldn't have a visual link. Thus it would have changed.

portal gun would not change, i never said anything about the portal it self. not being able to see yourself through a portal really isnt that big of a deal.

If the portal gun is producing bizzarely different potals, then the portal gun's changed. Besides, it is a bit weird. Why would you go from being able to see a clear image on the other side, to not being able to. Worse than that, you wouldn't be able to see wth you were stepping into!

you obviously ignored my post of a different revision of the portal gun earlier.

I didn't notice one. And I was referring to Boogaloo

It's easy to accuse me of being unimaginative, but the fact is that you have not proposed a single way in which it could be implemented without causing problems or being subpar to Portal (in which case, why bother?).

So maybe... Just maybe... You're the one being dumb here.

Ask Valve, they put both on the ship manifests you see in Episode Two.
