Hi im new to this forum.. :)

anyways.. if u saw the new hl2 tech videos.. in the wall video.. at the end it says that 20,000 polygons have been made into 1 polygon.. this means that even though it looks really good.. it will go easy on ur graphic card without any problems.. the only thing that ur cpu will really process alot is the animations and physics and that stuff.. but framewise i think the game will run just about good all ur pcs :)
---------------------------------
my specs
p24- 1.5 ghz
ati radeon 9500 pro 128 mb
256 ddr ram

mhm cool eh?

just no dx9 features w/o a dx9 supported card (duh)

I guess they made everyting look good and be easy on the graphics card. But we should really wait 30 more days to find out for ourselves.

i meant
p4..

what do u mean by help pc?
my pc should run it just fine at 1024 x 728 ... should get 30-40 fps..

These threads will bring out the wolves and theyll tear you a new asshole, just giving you fair warning

/me hears a dog whistle and comes running

Yes, this really does belong in the general hardware forums....thats what its there for :)

after all ive heard of this game working great on low end systems i dont know if i should get the game when it comes out or wait for my new comp. i know the games gonna look like complete crap on my current comp but....well its half life 2, that should be enough said right there.

I think people are freaking out too much about running HL2. The game looks good, but I can believe that it won't take a powerhouse of a system to run it.

True, and if you think this is bad, the Doom III boards must be full of people trembling at the knees with the thoughts of the upgrades they will need for that game.

that tech demo was really funny. That dude was stuffing around with that wall thing... And I was going wtf is he doing... then only at the end I got what he was up too. hehehe
looks good though. I must say that amazed me.

i waz able to run the doom 3 alpha on my pc without a single problem...

i played it at 1024 x 728 with af at 8x and aa at 6x without any slowdown... and this is my system we are talking about

p4- 1.5 ghz
ati radeon 9500 pro 128 mb
256 ddr ram

if my shitty pc can handle doom 3 between 30-60 fps and look good then im sure i can play hl2 without a single problem... here are some pics i took from my doom 3 alpha..

Maybe it runs so well because you have shadows disabled...at least that's what it looks like in the pictures.

no shadows are on... without them.. the game would have no scaryness to it.. lol

how did this thread morph from HL2 playability to D3 playability?

I have to say I'm highly skeptical about the whole 20,000polys down to ONE. I'm not saying they're lying per se, it's just that it seems a bit too good. Or that it might just look crap. Well, whatever. We'll see and I hope I'm proven wrong. (I should upgrade my GF3 64MB, right?)

Yeah an upgrade from your GeF3 64MB might be in order if your looking to play maxed out ;)

Thing is Bass, I only have an AthlonXP 1600 and 256Mb RAM and I'm tempted to fully upgrade, ie: new comp from scratch, but the less I can spend the better (I'm a student, you see) I don't wanna e-mail Gabe or anyone about something that's so self-serving and trivial. I just wanna have it lookin' purty decent. I first played the original all in software, so I guess this might be a similar experience - not too bad, hopefully.

I feel ya, I just got a new comp after running the last few months on hopes and dreams basically (aka 32 MB GeF 2, 128 MB Ram, 20 GB HD, and P4 1.5)

The only thing i know about computer is that I need to have the best one than everyone else.

There are certain things/effects that can only be done by DX9, and previous versions can't do them. However only the newer generation of graphics cards can utilise these features and so these features are specific to DX9 and the cards that use it. Bummer.

sounds like your over-compensating for something ;)

el Chi> 20000 polys to ONE is possible: normal mapping, it's just like a 3D image (you know, those pictures you have to watch with green&red glasses), colors are defining the 3D placement, so that you see the 3D details in-game. My explanation is crappy as hell, of course, but just search how works normal mapping, you'll be surprised...
You can make a 2000 polys character looks like it was a 200000 polys one... (this is how Doom3 works)

Of course, this saves CPU usage, but adds textures data in the memory, I believe.

Thanks - that explains it perfectly! Just hope it really makes a difference to my little beige love-box.

No, not THAT one...

is a radeon 9000 pro 128 meg card DX9 compatible? i just bought this thing like 2 months ago :'(

Correct me if Im wrong, but I think the 9600 (9500?) and up are the DX9 compatible cards.

the ati 9000's are direct x 8 cards they will show just about all the goodies you dont need to upgrade.

the water will still shine ect... you should not have framerate problems either.

?

All the 9000's?

9700 and 9800 are DX9

A TNT2 will not have ANY bumpmapping. It will look like HL does, but maybe with more detailed textures.

While the normal mapping definately helps reduce load on the polygon throughput, it does require lots of memory. 128 at least on your GPU is a really good idea if you want the normal mapping in full splendour.

The radeon 9500 pro is a kick azzzz card. ATI made it too powerful and pulled it off the shelves because they lost so much money (High end card for a mid range market). The 9500 is really great, cheap and a Direct x 9 card.

However, the 9000 pro is awful. Gave me nothing but problems when i had it. It was slow as hell and only direct x 8.

170 for a 9500 pro was the best money I ever spent.

But still, the game will run on a DIRECT X 6 CARD.
Stop whining!
And 400 dollars is too much for one piece of hardware (9800 pro).
