I know that every game in the hl series has a double meaning , such as blue shift (blue shifting and the opposite is the refference to barney's shift) , but what does half life mean?

i know what is half life (the decay of nuclear stuff) i mean the OTHER term

There's not really one specifically... though it could allude to the realism of HL (at the time), or the freaky life forms encountered throughout...

Or probably is reffering to the fact that one will have 50% life most of the gaming time.

It sounds cool. Theres not really any specific reason other than its reference to biological decay, and the fact that valve was going to use 'Half-Dead' but thought it sounded cliche and trying to hard to be scary, so half-life was picked.

Man, could you imagine if the Half life series was named 'Gordon' or "Freeman", just like everything else with a character's name for a title.

I don't even want to think about what Codename Gordon would be called.

Opposing Force and Blue shift were both created by Gearbox. Half-Life was simply the name Valve chose. There's little point in analysing it.

I agree with Druckles but there would be a second meaning to it, if you think about it, it could mean many things like the HALF LIFE-FORMS you discover throughout the game, like zombies etc, also it could be a meaning to You as the player taking HALF the control of Gordon's movements and life throughout the game

The name was probably chosen more to set an atmosphere than anything else.

Well idk if you can set much of an atmosphere with just a game name >.> it's more to enthuse a possible player to pay for it, but then a name still wouldn't make a person do that, if the game looks good or has good reviews people will play it, the name is often a spin on words that entangles a player within a game and it's mysteries, like Warcraft 3 frozen throne, the game is really entirely based on Arthas and his race to Ice Crown, but "Frozen Throne" also has a secondary meaning which applies to arthas finding his Cold side where he plans on sitting for the rest of his life, so i still think that Half Life may have secondary, or multiple meanings like most games that the developers actually took time thinking and developing the game, many games have no meaning they are just titles to well tell you this game is called <Insert Game Title Here> , those titles fail imo i prefer entanglement titles

I'd like to commend you on the extreme length of your sentences. Truly fantastic.

Personally, I think it's just to set the mood, and sound cool and science-y. Because science is cool and fun.

Living your life at half the potential, until a dramatic event changes all that.

Freeman was a fellow associate at a research facility, and has become a demigod of sorts over the course of 10 years.

I think maybe thinking about it too much.

There is a half-life 1 section of the Raising the Bar book, and they talk a bit about the naming process, the original project name was Quiver, based on the Arrowhead Base in stephen kings The Mist, then they went through alot of names till they reached half-life.

It's half past life.

Thread conclusion:
-halflife2.net has one primary fuction. To confuse you even more on hl related stuff and get you loling hard to Zombieturtles posts and facepalming to G(ordon)-mans

I have no idea what you have against G(ordon)-man , hes ok , at least he doesnt troll like some people.

G(ordon)-man is pretty cool, i got nothing against him >.>

and cheers KineticAesthetic <333 ^_^

I figured out that half life means that the_e has only half more life if he messes with me again.

Pffft i don't need a trophy i can just drag my computer around with this page open that says i'm the winner!

I am the winner. Always remember that. In every concievable situation, I, I am the winner.

Except if I'm winning at losing.

I'm a loser at losing.

But I never lose, so that makes me the winner.

So guys I'm trying to figure out the meaning behind Portal and Episode Two. The meaning behind Episode One is obvious, seeing as Gordon is for the first time operating as an agent in himself instead of for the g-man. The game over messages make it clear that Gordon is being influenced by the g-man up until this game and in EP2 the Vortigaunts have sunk his claws into him. Therefore Episode ONE, as Gordon is ONE man without being controlled by outside forces. It also clearly symbolises the phallic Citadel and its explogasm at the end of the game, spraying blobs of white advisors all over the landscape.

Im pretty sure it symbolises Gordon going out and doing stuff for himself instead of a higher power , in effect "growing a pair".
