Why has Steam removed CS's botplay ability?

I installed CS:CZ just last night to try out the bots and see how good they were, and they were fine, but then I wanted to see how many ppl are still playing classic CS after HL2 with CS:S came out.

But, I had to install Steam in order to look at servers and play, and once I did so, I found I could no longer play with bots on CS. If I still can, I haven't seen how. All the old options on the menu now set up botless servers.

Can (or will) anyone help me out here?

Not just CZ, there's a Skirmish mode that lets you play any of the maps with a number of bots of a chosen difficulty. Or don't you know that?

Wrong. You're thinking of CS:CZ. The original CS never had bots, and never will.

nah cs is a stand alone online game, but you can play with bots if you download them, and put them onto your own server. Or don't you know that?

CS1.6 had bots when steam was still in beta. Not anymore though.

OK, OK, I got my facts wrong. Let me explain:

I know CS was originally online only with no bots, and that CZ has a bunch of missions you can play with bots (including a bunch of deleted ones), but my point is that you can also play Skirmishes on any CS map with bots, as well as play it online as if it were plain ol' CS, available as a mod for HL.

The reason I got CS:CZ in the first place was because I didn't want to have to install HL, then the mod, then any patches just to play good ol' CS.

My point is, now that Steam has been installed for me to play online, I find the bots seem to be not available anymore - but I would LIKE to play with bots, for when I've not got an Internet connection.

Are you telling me I'd have to remove, then install CS:CZ again just to have bots?? Seems stupid to me.

Don't you have CZ on Steam? If not, I think you can just use your CZ cd-key to enable it on Steam. This way you can play with the bots when you are not online.

They were in an early version of CS 1.6 but they were removed in September 2003. If you had the non-Steam version of CS 1.6 then installing Steam will have downloaded the necessary updates. This will then have removed the bot capability from CS 1.6.

However, it's not necessarily such a bad thing because they did suck rather much and the ones in CS:CZ are much more fun and challenging in my opinion.

In answer to your question: Yes, you will need to reinstall CS:CZ to play with BOTs. You will have to play with the improved graphics and slightly different maps. Though of course you could just take the maps from CS1.6 and put them in your CS:CZ map folder and then play the old version with newer weapons :)

Thank you very much, Chris_D - I played CS online earlier and I just remembered why I want to play against bots so much: they don't bail out on you as soon as they start losing.

You've been very helpful, and I only wish I didn't have to reinstall CS in order to get the bots to work, but, well there you are. As you said.
