Why hasn't this been put into a strategy game (as far as I know)

I remember playing Red Alert 2 and using z to map out entire attack routes for my tanks and chrono legenares (assigne 1 to each unit and the enemy is screwed). Then just letting go and watching the battle unfold and give nudged when nessisary.

Why the hell can't you do this on a larger scale? Imagine having an entire base assauly pre-planned and mapped to F1-F12 (or whatever). Taking C&C Generals as an example, you press F1, your auroras take out the power. You press F2 and your helicopters rush in and take out the enemy tanks. You press F3 and your tanks rool in and start taking down the remaining enemies. You press F4 and your auroras come in for more strikes on enemy buildings. You press F5 and your infantry run in for capture.

Hmmm, very interesting rimfire! That though requires a lot of pre-planning and building up your forces and knowing the exact locations of the enemy and blah!

Lovely idea!

p.s in other RTS news, the latest on C&C3's UI is now available, read the sig!

Well i know its not identical, but you can group your units, holding down control and pressing a number on the selected units. I usually have 2 planes on 1, another 2 on 2, helicopters on 3, tanks on 4 etc etc. Then when i attack, i look at the enemy base, press 1 attack, 2 attack...repeat. Thats not too different.

That would be really cool. You would have to do a lot of scouting in order to accomplish this. You could use your scout to find specific targets, download the information to a squad, then when ready, send your squads out to those specific targets. Of course you would have to deal with complications along the way, which is awesome of course. Great idea, but difficult to pull off.

EDIT: But then again, this could be done in ANY RTS, you would just have to do it manually instead of pressing F1 and watching it happen.

Total Annihilation had some cool/unique 'planning' and basic things you could do and Supreme Commander has it too, just 1000x better.

Dear god if I didn't know that I would deserve to be shot. I usualy have rocket buggies on 1, quad cannons on 2, mobs on 3 and Kell on 0. Alternativly aurora's on 0-7 and comachies on 1 with combat chinoks on 2.

I wasn't aware you could do this in C&C: Generals, the developers definately didn't shout out about the feature, which is probably the reason no one else has done it (I'm pretty sure it didn't appear in the manual and/or ingame tutorial), I did know of its existense in Red Alert 2, but because it wasn't properly implemented I never used it.

I do know that SupCom will have a similar feature, but aims on concentrating on getting everybody to appear at the same time for a coordinated attack.

I sort of did in this C&C Generals. Playing as the Air general (in the expansion), there was nothing more than satisfying than hotkeying a pair of King Raptors to every key, and then scoping out the enemy base with a satellite. Then just roll on down the numbers, tap 0, left click on enemy barracks, tap 1, click on enemy airfield, and then just do this for 10 groups, totalling 20. 20 King Raptors striking in perfect coordination is something to behold.

I wish RTS games would have the option (when you select a group of units) to have them each attack a separate unit rather than focus firing or spreading fire so unevenly.
